Erislandy Lara vs Danny Garcia Betting Analysis

Cuban middleweight Erislandy Lara will put his WBA belt on the line this Saturday night against former 140lb unified champ Danny Garcia on the undercard of this weekend’s Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga showdown in Las Vegas.

Lara, who was controversially beaten by Canelo over a decade ago now, has enjoyed more success up at middleweight where he’s held a portion of the belt for well over five years now.

That’s in part due to some savvy match-making however and at 41 years of age, it’ll be interesting to see how much longer the Cuban veteran can reign.

Erislandy Lara enters the ring this weekend as the -260 favorite, with Danny Garcia coming back as a +200 underdog.

Lara’s Adapted Well To New Style

Erislandy Lara has transitioned his style incredibly well as he’s gotten older, as well as moving up in weight, almost looking like a completely different fighter from the one who fought Canelo Alvarez and Austin Trout all those years ago.

Lara, who used to be a fleet-footed range fighter, has now opted for a much more inside approach to boxing, countering opponents who over-commit with some devastating one-punch knockouts, none more so than in his last fight against Michael Zerafa.

Is Danny Garcia Still Danny Garcia?

While Danny Garcia used to be THE man down in the 140lb division, sensationally beating Lucas Matthysse as a big underdog in their showdown in Las Vegas, those days are almost eleven years ago at this point, and despite a decent run at welterweight where he picked up the WBC title, Garcia’s run as a main attraction in the sport has stalled considerably across recent years.

As a testament to that, Danny Garcia has fought just once since December 2020, and with him continuing to jump up through the weight classes, first to 154lb and now to 160lb, it’s unclear if the Danny Garcia that shows up on Saturday night will look anything like the version that took to the ring against Errol Spence Jr. almost four years ago.

Both fighters have been extremely inactive in recent years, with Lara himself having just one fight since May 2022, so it’ll be interesting to see what versions of these fighters we get on Saturday.

That said, Danny Garcia still looked like Danny Garcia in his win over Jose Benavidez Jr. in his last fight, and it’s a style he’s incredibly comfortable in at this point, looking to venture in on the inside and deliver those strong, compact hooks of his.

That could well lead him into dangerous territory this weekend against this new, powerful version of Lara, yet Danny Garcia has never been stopped across his career, and if Lara can’t find a way to land something big in this one, the smaller man may well wear him down and take the W.

With Garcia having extra motivation after his father suffered a stroke back in April also, we’re taking the Philadelphian fighter to get the victory on Saturday against Erislandy Lara.
