Joe Cordina vs Edward Vazquez Betting Analysis

Joe Cordina makes the first defense of his IBF super-featherweight title (the second time around coincidentally after being stripped last year), as he takes on the very tough Edward Vazquez in Monte Carlo this weekend.

Cordina re-won his super-featherweight crown earlier this year after edging a split decision victory against the beneficiary of that stripping, Shavkat Rakhimov, in his home city of Cardiff.

Edward Vazquez meanwhile has only had one loss over his career so far, that coming via another close split decision against the highly-talented Raymond Ford last February, so he should present a real test to Cordina’s credentials on Saturday night.

Joe Cordina enters this fight as the substantial -1400 favorite at most books, with Edward Vazquez coming back at around a +700.

Cordina Looks To Make 2nd Time The Charm

In what arguably felt like a harsh decision by the IBF prior to his scheduled first fight against Shavkat Rakhimov last November, stripping the former European gold medallist for being forced to delay that bout due to injury, the Welshman is determined to make 2nd time the charm and hoover up the belts at super-featherweight provided he comes out on top this weekend.

Cordina, who underwent hand surgery after his 2nd round destruction of experienced former champion Kenichi Ogawa last year, stated it was the lowest point of his career to date, to watch the belt he’d worked so hard for get taken away by the sanctioning body due to something outside of his control.

Since then however, Cordina has come back with a vengeance, outboxing the tough Shavkat Rakhimov back in April to get his title returned to him, and, provided he gets through Saturday’s test, should be on course for some major unification fights toward the end of the year.

Vazquez Not Here To Pad Records

After almost toppling the undefeated Raymond Ford last year in Phoenix, Arizona, with one judge edging it 96-94 to Vazquez in that ten-round contest, Edward Vazquez is certainly not coming here to make up the numbers on Saturday night as he looks to make a statement in the 130 lb division.

That said, Vazquez is rated #10 currently with the IBF, so this is considered a step-down for the Welsh champion, and with Vazquez owning under a 20% KO percentage across his 15 wins so far, he faces a tall task in trying to outbox a very seasoned and highly technical boxer in Joe Cordina this weekend.

Joe Cordina can often be a difficult fighter to bet on, simply because of his unpredictability in fights, often content to use his superior movement and technical ability to outbox opponents, but also having the necessary tools to absolutely obliterate opponents early as well, just as he did against Kenichi Ogawa and Joshuah Hernandez recently.

However, he faces an opponent this weekend in Edward Vazquez who has shown himself to be incredibly durable across his career so far, never having been seriously hurt in fights, and if he can weather an early Cordina storm in this one, he should have enough to get over the finish line on Saturday night.
