Joe Joyce vs Christian Hammer Analysis
‘Juggernaut’ Joe Joyce takes on Christian Hammer this weekend over in London as the undefeated British heavyweight fighter looks to continue his ascendancy through the heavyweight rankings with another statement win this weekend.
Joyce comes off a stoppage win over Carlos Takam last year and was originally intended to face Joseph Parker this summer in what would have been a highly-anticipated matchup (one that Joyce’s team is still looking at for September), but Hammer was chosen as an interim opponent while all that gets decided.
Christian Hammer for his part, while losing three of his last five fights overall, is a capable opponent taking good fighters like Tony Yoka, Alexander Povetkin, Frank Sanchez and Luis Ortiz all the distance over recent years.
The Juggernaut Rolls On
While not many people knew how high Joe Joyce’s ceiling was after turning pro back in 2017, the London native really had his coming out party against highly touted prospect Daniel Dubois two years ago, stopping him in the tenth round with a broken eye socket.
While everyone already knew Joyce possessed power, he showed a level of finesse in dealing with Dubois far greater speed and mobility in that fight that many observers hadn’t seen from him previously.
However, at 36 years of age the clock is definitely ticking on Joe Joyce’s career and world title shots need to be on the horizon for the British fighter sooner rather than later.
The Hammer Is Durable
Despite a record of 26-9 over his 35 fight pro career, with five of those losses coming over his last ten fights as well, Christian Hammer is nonetheless an extremely durable competitor and his only stoppage loss since his 2015 fight against Tyson Fury, came against his cousin Hughie Fury last year when Hammer pulled a bicep and was forced to retire early.
Even in that stoppage loss against Tyson Fury seven years ago, Hammer still wasn’t stopped in expected fashion as his corner threw in the towel after Fury started to showboat and make the fight look a little too easy.
In terms of durability and chins, Hammer’s is one that definitely passes all the tests but that durability will be severely put to the test here against a fighter in Joyce who hasn’t let any opponent hear the final bell in almost three years.
Joe Joyce vs Christian Hammer Prediction
Christian Hammer is an extremely durable fighter, but he’s also incredibly slow, and that’s a dangerous weakness against a fighter who packs as much of a punch as Joe Joyce does.
The stoppage is highly probable in this one as while Hammer has took a lot of other top level heavyweights the distance over recent years, none of them matched the incessant ability to march forward and look to deliver punishment as much as Joyce does.
I do believe Hammer can find some limited success early in this fight in terms of finding openings against Joyce, but that relentless from the Juggernaut will eventually take over and we like him to get the stoppage between rounds 5-8 at +160 as the play for Saturday.
