Kenshiro Teraji vs Carlos Canizales Betting Analysis

Unified junior flyweight champion and Ring Magazine #1 Kenshiro Teraji will look to defend his belts on Tuesday night, January 23rd, against veteran Carlos Canizales over in Osaka, Japan.

Teraji is coming into this one off four straight stoppage victories since his 2021 loss to Masamichi Yabuki, the only loss of his professional career so far, and one he immediately avenged by stopping Yabuki in the 3rd round of their rematch.

Carlos Canizales is coming off four straight victories himself however, including against the formerly undefeated Daniel Matellon back in June.

It’s no surprise to see Teraji enter Tuesday’s contest as anywhere between a -600 to -950 favorite at most books, with Canizales coming back at a pretty much consensus +500 (odds range from +400 to +540 at the time of writing at most major books).

All-Action Teraji A Firm Fan Favorite

There’s a reason Kenshiro Teraji is considered a huge fan favorite in his home country of Japan as the current WBA and WBC champion employs a fan-friendly attacking assault on his opponents, something that makes his style incredibly exciting to watch, but also leaves him vulnerable on the other side.

Short-notice challenger Anthony Olascuaga found plenty of opportunities to land big shots against Teraji in their all-out war back in April of last year, a fight in which Teraji was caught with multiple hard, flush shots on the inside against Olascuaga before rallying back to win with a vicious onslaught up against the ropes in the 9th round.

Canizales Looks To Get Back In The Mix At World Level

Former WBA (regular) junior flyweight champion Carlos Canizales will look to get back in the mix at world level by pulling off the upset in Japan on Tuesday night.

Canizales, who held the WBA regular title from March 2018 until his defeat to Esteban Bermudez in May of 2021, defended his title twice in the Far East before that eventual stoppage loss against Bermudez.

Coincidentally, that fight against Bermudez over in Mexico City was an absolute war as well, with both men trading huge shots on the inside right from the opening bell.

Eventually, however, just as Canizales looked to be on the ascendency, Bermudez caught him with a huge overhand right in the 6th round from which Canizales simply never recovered.

Kenshiro Teraji vs Carlos Canizales Expert Prediction

That loss against Bermudez has been Canizale’s only loss to date across his career so far, and arguably in a fight he was getting the better of at the time of the stoppage as well, so he’s definitely a live dog coming into this one on Tuesday.

Kenshiro Teraji is an incredibly exciting fighter to watch, but he can sometimes be guilty of getting too reckless in fights, and against a fighter in Canizales who employs an effective high guard and who can also pivot down to rip off lethal body shots as well, he should be able to ask the same questions Olascuaga asked of Teraji also, and test that chin of Teraji in the process.

This line’s just a little too wide given what we know about both fighter’s styles, and I’m happy to sprinkle a unit or two on the underdog to win outright over in Japan on Tuesday.

Artur Beterbiev vs Callum Smith Prediction: Carlos Canizales (+425)
