In what’s set to be one of the biggest fights in Irish boxing history this Saturday, two of the island’s best undefeated welterweight prospects go head-to-head in what’s set to be a highly-anticipated IBF final eliminator for Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis’ world title.

Both Crocker and Donovan are rated top-six by the IBF and WBA respectively, while Donovan also sits in the WBC’s rankings and Crocker sits 7th with the WBO.

Books are finding it incredibly hard to split both fighters heading into this one as well, with Lewis Crocker coming in as the very marginal -110 favorite currently, while Paddy Donovan comes back as a slight +100 underdog.

Two Paths, Yet Same Destination

It’s fair to say that Lewis Crocker wasn’t always on the scene at the world level, with an extremely disjointed opening to his career that saw him pick up a European title, yet little else across his opening 14 fights.

An almost two-year layoff didn’t help matters either, with Crocker admitting he went through some tough times during that sabbatical, but since joining Billy Nelson’s gym over in Scotland it really has been all positive for Crocker who dominated in arguably his biggest fight to date against Tyrone McKenna in the ‘Battle of Belfast’ just over 12 months ago.

With 20 straight wins and fighting in front of his home city, it will likely take a huge effort from Donovan to derail the ‘Croc’ this weekend.

Donovan Expecting Raucous Atmosphere in Belfast

While Crocker has had his ups and downs to start his career, Donovan has almost exclusively been on the upward trajectory by comparison, getting snapped up by mega-promoters Top Rank before he even had his first professional contest.

With Top Rank CEO, Bob Arum, calling Donovan “the best-looking fighter since Muhammad Ali”, eyes were always going to be on Donovan from the outset, and for the most part, he’s delivered on that promise with 14 straight wins, the last five of which have all come by stoppage.

Donovan is no stranger to fighting in Belfast either, lacing up the gloves here on no less than four separate occasions, and knows that while Crocker may be the hometown fighter going in here, he will nonetheless have plenty of support making the journey north also.

This is an incredibly close fight to call on Saturday as both fighters have high technical ability and both own a very similar depth of resume also.

However, despite Donovan having the far greater KO percentage across his career so far, it’s actually Crocker who, under trainer Billy Nelson, has really started to put his punches together extremely well and looks the much stronger of the two heading into this one.

While Crocker did go the distance against both Tyrone McKenna and Conah Walker in two of his last three fights, he severely hurt McKenna throughout in their fight, as well as cracking Walker so hard his legs buckled in the very first round.

Donovan, while looking the marginally better technically of the two fighters, especially from the outside, just hasn’t been in there with that level of puncher yet, struggling for large parts in his recent fight against Williams Andres Herrera also.

While this fight may be close, we believe Crocker’s greater punching power in this one, combined with his relentless inside game, will likely get him over the line against Donovan on Saturday.
