Luis Alberto Lopez vs Angelo Leo Betting Analysis
Albuquerque, New Mexico hosts this weekend’s IBF world title featherweight showdown between reigning holder Luis Alberto Lopez, as he takes on hometown Albuquerque native Angelo Leo this Saturday night live over on ESPN+.
Both fighters have been on phenomenal runs of late, with Lopez picking up his title in dominant fashion over England’s Josh Warrington 18 months ago, and following that up with three additional title defenses since.
Angelo Leo meanwhile is on a four-fight win streak himself since his only loss to former junior featherweight champion Stephen Fulton a little over three years ago, and is looking to become a world champion for the second time.
Luis Alberto Lopez comes into this fight as the sizeable -475 favorite on Saturday, with Angelo Leo coming back as a +340 underdog.
Questions Answered On Lopez’s Ceiling
After demolishing Michael Conlan over in Belfast as a marginal underdog last year in what was a terrific display from the Mexican fighter, many people put Lopez as the main man to beat inside the 126lb division after that performance.
However, Lopez looked far from spectacular in his next outing, grinding out a decision win against a very durable Joet Gonzalez down in Texas to somewhat pump the brakes on Lopez’s credentials as the king of the featherweights.
He answered those critics in his next fight however with a punishing 8th-round TKO stoppage of the ever-tough Reiya Abe back in March 2024, cementing himself in most people’s eyes as the #1 featherweight on the planet.
Leo Looking To Regain His Old Form
Many people in boxing had almost written Angelo Leo off after an extended 2-and-a-half-year layoff from the sport that was only finally snapped this past January with a 3rd round stoppage over Mike Plania.
Leo showed he still kept his power in that time away, wilting Plania with a brutal left hook to the body which ended the fight in statement fashion, before then following that up with another dominant display against Eduardo Baez back in April also.
Leo will need to completely shake off whatever ring rust remains ahead of this one however if he’s going to emerge victorious against Luis Alberto Lopez on Saturday night.
Luis Alberto Lopez vs Angelo Leo Expert Prediction
This should be an all-action fight from the get-go here on Saturday night as both fighters employ a heavy offensive style in the ring that should be extremely crowd-pleasing to watch this weekend.
Michael Conlan said in his post-fight interview after the Luis Alberto Lopez match that Lopez was one of the hardest fighters to prepare for given his extremely unorthodox style, being almost impossible to find a suitable sparring partner for in which to prepare.
That unorthodox style was on full display once again against Reiya Abe earlier this year as well, with Abe unable to read and time Lopez’s lunges into the pocket, or his wide combinations which continued to frustrate Abe throughout that fight.
That said, that lunging style was almost tailor-made for Conlan and Abe, who predominantly like to operate outside at range, and who were both unprepared for Lopez’s ability to crash the pocket at a moment’s notice.
Against fighters who like to crowd the inside however, such as Josh Warrington, Joet Gonzalez, and his upcoming opponent Angelo Leo also, that lunging ability will be almost negated, and with it a large part of what makes Lopez such a dangerous fighter in the ring.
This is a tough fight to call, and while I believe Lopez has the greater toolset overall here, Leo has the ability to play spoiler on Saturday night and turn this into a war of attrition type fight that could make it razor close by the time all is said and done.
Either way, I believe we see this fight go the distance this weekend in what should be an action-packed fight from start to finish.
