Nick Ball vs TJ Doheny Betting Analysis

WBA featherweight champion Nick Ball looks to defend his title against former world champion TJ Doheny this weekend in Ball’s home city of Liverpool, England.

Nick Ball has been on an incredible run of late, with a breakout domestic performance against Isaac Lowe back in 2022, before breaking onto the world stage with wins against former world champion Isaac Dogboe, a very controversial split decision draw against WBC champion Rey Vargas in which Ball had Vargas down twice in that fight, and his crowning moment so far in overcoming an excellent Ray Ford for the WBA title on a mammoth Riyadh card last year.

However, in Doheny, Ball faces a fighter with a wealth of experience and genuine knockout power this weekend in what should be a highly entertaining fight.

Ball comes into this one as the substantial -1200 favorite in Vegas right now, with Doheny coming back as a +700 underdog.

Wrecking Ball Gathering Steam

In what was arguably a career-best performance against former world title challenger Ronny Rios in his last fight back in October, knocking the older man down three times in that fight before it was eventually waved off, Nick Ball continues to generate a ton of heat in the division with his low center of gravity explosive style that has put the division firmly on notice.

Ball has already stated he’d be more than willing to welcome in current undisputed junior-featherweight champion Naoya Inoue up to 126 as well should the Monster decide to move up in the near future in what would no doubt be an instant classic given both men’s offensive styles.

Hard Road For Doheny

A lot of fighters get the tagline of being a road warrior in boxing, someone who is willing to go to the other fighter’s backyard in order to take them on, but few display this mentality as well as TJ Doheny does.

A genuine road warrior, fighting predominantly in Australia, Japan, and the U.S., Doheny has fought in his native country of Ireland just once, and even then he was considered the road opponent facing a largely hostile Belfast crowd when he took on Mick Conlan back in 2021.

Turning 39 this year, Doheny likely doesn’t have many miles left on the clock, but every time he’s overlooked and is considered ‘done’ he has the innate ability to come back with a stunning knockout, as he did in Japan against hometown knockout artist himself Kazuki Nakajima back in 2023, with Doheny coming off three losses in his previous four fights before that monstrous right hand closed the show.

Both of these fighters actually employ very similar styles in the ring, with both Ball and Doheny looking to jump inside the pocket at a moment’s notice from low center of gravity positions, before winging in their trademark hooks and short crosses on an opponent.

There’s no question however that Ball is the fresher, and more explosive of the two when employing that strategy, yet Doheny remains dangerous, and there’s a reason he remains a crowd favorite over in Japan, he delivers knockouts.

Nick Ball will likely have far too much energy and volume for Doheny in this one, but if he gets overly reckless here, which can often happen with fighters looking to put on a show in their home city, then Doheny more than has the ability to make him pay, and as a result, I don’t see this one going the distance this weekend.
