Two of the U.K.’s best flyweights will match up this Saturday over in Birmingham, England, as up-and-coming hometown favorite, and former gold medalist Galal Yafai, takes a huge step up in competition this weekend as he takes on former world champion Sunny Edwards in an all-British showdown.

Despite being the former champion and having the far more extensive professional career of the two, Sunny Edwards is also the younger of the two fighters heading into this weekend’s bout, and has barely broken a sweat across the majority of wins to date, being rightly hailed as one of the best defensive boxers in the entire sport.

Due to that greater level of experience, Sunny Edwards goes into this contest as the marginal -140 favorite here on Saturday against hometown hero Galal Yafai in what will be a real crossroads fight for both men this weekend.

Edwards On The Comeback Trail After Bam

With 20 wins from 20 fights heading into the Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez fight last December, many people, including the books, gave Sunny Edwards a serious chance against who it’s now clear is one of the best fighters in the entire sport.

While the fight was extremely competitive across the opening four or five rounds, it was during the mid-point of the bout that Bam’s greater pressure started to tell, and even Edward’s high-level defense wasn’t enough to hold off a stoppage that eventually came in the ninth round.

However, Bam is arguably already a P4P great in the sport, so with only one loss against him and still being only 28 years of age, Sunny Edwards has plenty of opportunity to reclaim world glory once again.

Yafai Looking To Take That Next Step

With two older brothers who have also been successful in boxing, especially the oldest Kal Yafai who was a long-reigning WBA super-flyweight champion, Galal Yafai has a lot to emulate in his household, but already proved he’s well up to the task, taking gold back at the 2020 (2021) Tokyo Olympic Games.

However, there is always the danger, just like what happened to his older brother Kal Yafai, that stepping up to the elite level of the sport before you’re ready poses its dangers, just as Kal found out to his detriment back in 2020 as he was absolutely dismantled across nine rounds by all-time great Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez, a fight Yafai surprisingly went in as the favorite for.

While Sunny Edwards hasn’t quite scaled the heights of a Chocolatito Gonzalez yet, he is by far the best opponent Galal Yafai has faced to date, and it’ll be interesting to see if the youngest Yafai brother can go one better than his two older siblings.

Galal Yafai has shown himself to be a terrific pressure fighter across his career so far, combining both power and ring generalship to ensure that four of his last five opponents have failed to make it the distance against him, three of which ended inside the first four rounds.

However, as stated previously, Sunny Edwards has already faced the elite this sport has to offer, and has very often thrived against pressure fighters, at least one’s not named Bam Rodriguez, continuously calling out his brother’s conqueror Julio Cesar Martinez across recent years as the Mexican’s high-volume style would mesh well against the younger Edwards defensive style.

While Galal Yafai is far more composed than Martinez is in how he applies pressure, he’s nowhere near the level that Jesse Rodriguez is, and despite being technically gifted in his own right, he may well fall short here against the much more experienced Sunny Edwards on Saturday.
