Teofimo Lopez vs Jamaine Ortiz Betting Analysis

The showman Teofimo Lopez returns to the ring on Thursday night ready to take on dangerous contender Jamaine Ortiz over in Las Vegas.

Lopez is coming off a commanding performance against the former 140lb undisputed king Josh Taylor back in June, a fight that once again showcased Ortiz’s skills and one that put him firmly back in the mix as one of the star attractions in the junior welterweight division.

Ortiz meanwhile came off a decision win against Antonio Moran back in September, an entertaining fight that saw both fighters get hurt with Ortiz eventually finishing the stronger of the two.

Teofimo Lopez enters Saturday’s contest as the prohibitive -750 favorite, with Jamaine Ortiz coming back at a +460.

Do I Still Got It?

Those were the words uttered in the post-fight interview after Teofimo Lopez squeezed out a narrow decision win against tricky Spanish technician Sandor Martin in New York just over a year ago.

Lopez, who had previously lost all of his belts to George Kambosos in 2021, looked like he might be heading for yet another loss as he had little answers to Sandor Martin’s jabs to the body or defensive construct in that fight, with many observers feeling that Lopez was very lucky to come out with the decision in that one.

The post-fight interview, along with a subsequent “retirement”, hinted that all might not be too well with the Lopez camp, but just as quickly as the storm clouds loomed over ‘The Takeover’s’ career, they vanished just as fast with Lopez looking arguably back to his very best in overcoming an excellent fighter in Josh Taylor last summer.

No Longer A Surprise Factor

Jamaine Ortiz came on the scene with a bang back in 2022 when he outpointed former champion Jamel Herring in his comeback fight after his loss to Shakur Stevenson, a win that propelled Ortiz into facing yet another fighter on the comeback trail later that same year in Vasiliy Lomachenko.

While Lomachenko was able to get the decision win in that fight, outpointing Ortiz over twelve rounds, many people were extremely impressed by how competitive the fight was overall, with that performance in particular putting Ortiz’s name firmly on the map in the 135/140lb divisional picture.

This has all the hallmarks of a great fight on Thursday night as both guys can effectively counter-punch, are offensively minded, and can do a lot of the same things the other one can do in this fight as well.

That offense/counter-punch dynamic should lead to both fighters creating a ton of opportunities to land hard shots in this one on Thursday, a recipe for a potential KO.

That said, while Jamaine Ortiz is a solid fighter overall, he does pretty much everything just that little bit worse than Teofimo Lopez does, especially on the defensive end, with both fighter’s ability to get reckless when trying to enter the pocket being more pronounced with Ortiz as he often enters under a high guard which Lopez has been able to time effectively on opponents in the past.

That should lead to a rough-and-tumble fight for as long as it lasts on Thursday, and with both fighter’s being offensively minded, especially Ortiz, and both fighter’s being able to counter-punch effectively as well, especially Teofimo, when we mix both of those aspects together, that leads us to believe the value is on Lopez to get the KO victory in Las Vegas on Thursday.
