Vergil Ortiz Jr. vs Fredrick Lawson Betting Analysis
Vergil Ortiz Jr. makes his hotly anticipated return to the ring this weekend as the former Golden Gloves silver medalist takes on Fredrick Lawson in Las Vegas on Saturday.
Vergil Ortiz Jr. has been out of the ring now for well over a year, with rhabdomyolysis, a potential kidney-failing condition, being amongst one of the chief reasons why.
However, many observers have felt that Ortiz was draining himself too much in trying to make the welterweight limit of 147lb over his career so far, with numerous fight cancellations happening across the last few years which is one of the reasons Ortiz is making his 154lb debut this Saturday night in Las Vegas.
For opponent Fredrick Lawson, another fighter who has primarily fought at welterweight across the majority of his career, this weekend’s fight represents not only a career-high payday, but also the chance to pull off a momumental upset as a result should he become victorious on Saturday night.
Ortiz enters this one as the prohibitive -2500 favorite with Lawson coming back at a +1200.
Ortiz Looking To Make A Statement At 154
With all of Ortiz Jr.’s 19 wins coming by stoppage across his career so far, it’s easy to see why the hype is so high on the young fighter from Grand Prairie, Texas.
Those knockouts for Ortiz didn’t come against tomato cans either, with Ortiz Jr. stopping accomplished fighters in the likes of Mauricio Herrera, ‘Mean Machine’ Kavliauskas, and Britain’s Michael McKinson across his impressive resume to date.
Ortiz is an incredibly smart pressure fighter in the ring, able to break his way in on an opponent with a piledriver jab before unloading on the inside with devastating hooks, with the ability to change levels at will also, facets of his game that no opponent up to this point of his career has been able to deal with for the full 12 rounds.
Lawson Up Against The Odds
There’s no question Fredrick Lawson faces an almost Herculean task this Saturday in trying to derail Vergil Ortiz Jr.’s promising career.
Lawson is a well-schooled orthodox fighter, employing a high guard in the ring who looks to try and jab his way into range before unloading combinations, the issue with that rudimentary technique being is that it will only get you so far, with top-tier challengers not only able to time that step in jab, but also work around that high guard with impunity also.
Lawson got blasted out with a monster right hand back in 2019 against Juan Ruiz, and was again stopped by former fringe world titlist Charles Hatley just two years later as well through an accumulation of punishment near the end of the fight. The chances he does any better this weekend against a fighter as ferocious as Ortiz are slim at best.
Vergil Ortiz Jr. vs Fredrick Lawson Expert Prediction
This is a difficult one to predict in terms of when it will end as while Ortiz is an absolute monster in the ring, he has been out of said ring for almost 18 months at this point, and ring rust, even with a fighter as formidable as Ortiz, can take some time to shake off, with a general rule being to play the Over in fights any time a long layoff is a factor.
That said, Lawson gets touched way too much in fights, and the former 147lb fighter is facing not only a beast at welterweight, but one who has now moved up to 154lb, with that extra weight and power likely being a devastating combination for Lawson this weekend.
While it could take Ortiz Jr. a few rounds to get warmed up this weekend, once he does this fight is effectively over, and we see the Texan getting the stoppage in brutal fashion in the early-mid rounds on Saturday.
Take Vergil Ortiz Jr. to get the stoppage between rounds 4-6 this weekend in Las Vegas against Fredrick Lawson.
