Alabama vs Auburn Analysis
Alabama Crimson Tide come into this game as a favorite to start, against one of the best teams they have faced. This basketball team proved itself against Gonzaga and Houston, but this team has to hope it can step up to the plate, better than the football team did last night under pressure. The similarities are odd, Alabama is up against a SEC opponent with one of the best defenses in the country, and they are bringing a heavy hitter on the offensive side of the ball, with one of the best offenses in the country. Will this game bring the same fate that came to the football team?
Recent Trends Give Edge to Alabama
The Crimson Tide basketball team is 19-5 straight up against Auburn dating back to 1997, they have the advantage there, and they also have the advantage in the offensive numbers. Alabama is out-scoring Auburn on the year (82.5 PPG vs. 80.6 PPG for Auburn), home/away respectively (82.4 @ home for ALA vs. 81.7 away for AUB), against conference opponents (80.7 for ALA vs. 78.7 for AUB), and even in just the last five games (77 for ALA vs. 76.2 for AUB). Those numbers don’t seem to have a massive amount of variation, but it is bigger then you think when you take into account that Alabama has done this against the 4th hardest schedule in the country, while Auburn comes in at #26 (which obviously isn’t exactly easy), but Auburn has put up 52.7% & 53.6% shooting in their last two games.
Time for Alabama to Regress?
Alabama comes in with a top-10 offense in efficiency, emphasized by a tempo that ranks #34 in the county. They have won all three games against top 15 defenses already, and they have beat four out of five offenses in the top-25 they have played so far. They also look to continue an 18-7 against the spread run against teams averaging over 77 PPG. Alabama is just 7-8 against the spread on the year, including 3-4 @ home, and while they are 5-2 against the spread against teams on equal rest, they are just 2-5 with 2-3 days of rest and 1-2 against the SEC.
Auburn On Fire Against the Spread
If Auburn has dominated one thing this season it has been against the spread record, they have covered 11 out of 15 games (73.33%), while going 8-0 against the spread against opponents on equal rest, 3-0 against the spread vs. conference opponents, 4-2 w/ 2-3 days of rest and 9-4 against the spread off a win. Auburn has covered eight of their 12 games against teams with winning records, not to mention a combined 12-4 against the spread record against offenses and defenses in the top 100. Auburn has covered nine out of the last 11 and they look to continue a solid start to the SEC conference schedule.
Alabama vs Auburn Prediction
I think there are options both ways, a very loose opinion on Auburn plus the points. If I am making the play I am going with over 156. Both offenses are hot, and Alabama is giving up over 78 PPG to offenses in the top-25 in efficiency. Play: OVER 156
