Arizona vs Stanford Analysis

Arizona sits atop the Pac-12 conference, 4-0 against conference opponents and 14-1 on the year. Stanford is 3-2 in the conference and 10-5 on the year, which puts them at the 6th spot in the Pac-12. Yet, Stanford has taken the last two meetings, straight up and against the spread. Arizona comes in as a 9.5 point favorite in Thursday’s match-up with a total of 151, they head to California to change their streak against Stanford and continue their dominant run against Pac-12 opponents.

Arizona Playing Great All-Around Game

Arizona is coming off a 18 point win against Utah on Saturday and now heads to California to extend their 2-1 record on the road this year. They have won four out of their last five games, but covered just one of those games against the spread. Arizona has shot 50.8% or better in six of the last eight games, and all eight of those games resulted in Arizona shooting 44.8% or better. On the other end of the court they have been just as impressive, the opposition has shot over 44.1% just 1 time this entire season, yet no one has shot better than 47.5% against Arizona this season. Recently, the other thing that is very common for Arizona is staying under the total.

They have gone under in four out of the last five games, averaging a combined score of 149 in that five game stretch, against an average total of 155.5. A combination of the #14 offense in the country and the #9 defense in the country has balanced out holding the game continuously under the total. Arizona holds the #11 ranking in effective field goal percentage and the #4 two-point percentage, and the defense is #4 against effective field goal percentage, #1 against the two-point shot (in terms of shooting percentage) and on average, they are the second tallest team in the country.

Stanford Poised to Pull Off Upset

Stanford has had an impressive season thus far, even though they are 6th in the Pac-12, Stanford and Arizona are the only teams in the Pac-12 that are undefeated at home. Stanford has won 10 out of their 15 games this season, and they have pulled out the win in four of their last five games.

Not only is Stanford undefeated at home this season, but they are also 4-0 off a loss, and they are coming off a disappointing 64-67 loss against Washington on Saturday. Stanford holds the #100 ranked offense this season thus far, in terms of efficiency, and their defense comes in at #69 on the season. Stanford has definitely faced some tough competition, they are #30 in strength of schedule this season, which may help them prepare for the #3 ranked team in the country.

Stanford is definitely a deep team, they are in the top-50 in terms of minute distribution between starters and the bench, giving them the ability to stay fresh and ready, regardless of the unit on the floor. They also match up well against the height of Arizona, Stanford is not far behind, they are the #4 team in terms of average height and that can definitely play to their advantage in the interior. Stanford has favored the over this season, but going up against Arizona, they are facing one of their highest totals on the year.

They have only put up more than 151 combined points in four games this season, against Santa Clara, Colorado, Dartmouth and Liberty. Although, in those four games, three of them were the only three games that Stanford has shot 50% or better on the year (Colorado, Dartmouth, and Liberty), and the one game against Dartmouth was their only overtime game this season (Arizona hasn’t allowed an opponent to shot 50% or better all year).

Arizona vs Stanford Prediction

That being said, the under is where my opinion lies on this game. Just under 50% of the head-to-head match-ups at Stanford since 1997 has resulted in the game going under the total. Stanford is 5-2 over/under at home on the season, but the average total for the Cardinal on the season is a measly 131 points. Looking back, it looks as though the only way Stanford can put that many points up in a games is by shooting 50% or better, which is very, very unlikely against the 9th best defense in the country.

Prediction: UNDER 151
