When at full strength, Texas Tech leads the country in offensive efficiency and there is a large gap between the Raiders and No. 2 (Florida).
The problem for Texas Tech is that they can’t remember the last time that Chance McMillian, Elijah Hawkins, Darrion Williams, JT Toppin, Kerwin Walton and Christian Anderson all played together.
Senior guard McMillian has been the missing piece recently, but he was considered a full participant in Wednesday’s practice. McMillian is shooting 43.4-percent from three-point range this season, and will be a massive key in unlocking the Razorbacks’ aggressive defense if he is able to go.
He has missed five games over the last month, including losses to Houston and Arizona. This Arkansas team shares some characteristics from John Calipari’s 2013-14 Kentucky team, which went to the Final Four.
The Wildcats struggled in the regular season, but their talent (Julius Randle, Willie Cauley-Stein and the Harrison Twins) was undeniable.
Kentucky entered the NCAA Tournament as an 8-seed, won its opening round game with Kansas State then beat four top-15 teams en route to the National Championship Game.
Arkansas is loaded with talent, but Coach Calipari struggled to put the right pieces together in the first half of the season. They look like they’re fitting right now. Since February 1, Arkansas has gone 11-3-1 against the spread.
The average college basketball fan is probably sick of hearing about the SEC’s strength this season, but the proof is in the pudding. SEC teams went 28-13 against the spread as an underdog against non-conference opponents this season.
Arkansas vs Texas Tech Predictions
A couple more trends, courtesy of Evan Abrams: Coach Calipari has been listed as an underdog in the NCAA Tournament 12 times and is 8-3-1 against the spread, going 6-0-1 ATS while at Arkansas and Kentucky.
Coach Calipari’s teams are 6-1 ATS when receiving at least four points on the spread. Ultimately, very little would shock us with the final result in this game.
If McMillian comes back for the Raiders and hits four threes, Texas Tech could win this by double-digits. Or, Arkansas’ defense could swarm the Red Raiders’ guards and turn this into an ugly game that stays under the total by 20 points.
Nothing would shock us, but we are leaning a little bit more toward Option No. 2. Prior to beating Drake on Saturday, Texas Tech was 0-6 against the spread in neutral site contests this season.
