Boise State vs Fresno State Analysis
These Mountain West foes enjoyed a strong non-conference slate, each making bettors some money against the spread. Boise State has the momentum entering off a win as an underdog vs Washington State.
Fresno State is 9-3 against the spread and they play great defense, holding opponents to 44.6% FG compared to the national average of 49.7%. As a result, they are 8-4 to the under in their games. They just held Weber State to 25% shooting.
Fresno has had offensive struggles, and despite Orlando Robinson (18ppg, 8rpg) the team rarely has anyone step up big as a No. 2 scorer. They shoot 49.7% from two-point range and 31.1% from three, which are both two percent below the national average.
Boise State is 7-5 against the spread and has covered four straight games. They are 9-3 to the under. Boise holds opponents down even better than the Bulldogs with a 43.9% FG for opponents. They shoot 2s and 3s right on par with the national averages. They are led by Abu Kigab (14.8ppg 6.8rpg) but they spread the ball around much better and have more people to score with.
On paper these teams look fairly equal and similar in style. They are two tough defensive teams that do not score much. I think Boise has played much better competition and have the ability to spread the ball around better.
Against a stout defensive team a one player team like Fresno should have problems scoring if Robinson gets bogged down. Boise is very stout in defending the paint and defending the 3. Boise is also the first team Fresno faces with the size to shut down 7-foot Robinson.
When both teams play defense well and neither shoots great, it usually means go for the under. The under in this game right now is 118 which is too low to take. I suggest taking Boise State and laying the 4.5 points. When both teams have a great defense the team that has the ability to spread the ball offensively has more than a 4 point advantage in my opinion.

Boise State vs Fresno State Preview from GoldSheet
Fresno opened some eyes last week when laying down the hammer on Big Sky contender Weber State…at Ogden, no less. But the Wildcats didn’t have a proper matchup for 7-foot Bulldog threat Orlando Robinson, who scored 22 points in just 27 minutes of court time, and Fresno is not going to have a similar advantage tonight in Boise.
Keep in mind that last season it was Leon Rice’s switching Bronco defenses managing to fluster Robinson, who hit only 9 of 30 from the floor across the two meetings. And in springy 6-7 Abu Kigab and bruising 6-10 Serb Mladen Armus, Rice should again have proper matchups when he’s not deciding to go zone.
Defense has also been airtight for Boise in its current 6-game uptick when allowing no foe to score more than 60; at 58.5 pg, the Broncos rank 17th in scoring defense.
Meanwhile, Boise is hardly a one-man show, with Kigab (19 in the recent win at Washington State), Armus (17 & 12 in recent win over Santa Clara), G Marcus Shaver (20 vs. Prairie View on Dec. 10), and F Tyson Degenhart (21 in the Dec. 7 win at CS Northridge) all taking turns as go-to threats during the current uptick.
