Colorado State vs SDSU Analysis
While most “Bracketology” projections still have these two in the field of 68, lately they’ve both been sliding back closer to the bubble and toward the cut-line. ESPN’s Joe Lunardi has dropped the Aztecs to a precarious “last four in” designation for Selection Sunday.
Rams Need to Rebound
The Rams’ once-solid Dance credentials are looking a bit more shaky in the wake of consecutive losses to UNLV and Wyoming, with many regional observers still insisting Colorado State hasn’t been quite the same since a three-week Covid pause thru the festive season and immediately struggling upon the return, taking an awfully long time to put away big underdog Air Force then getting walloped at Viejas Arena by SDSU on Jan. 8, the Rams’ first loss of the campaign.
The offense just wasn’t there four weeks ago for CSU, which hit on only 12-of-43 from the floor and 3-of-20 beyond the arc in by far its worst shooting night of the season. But some Mountain West sources also believe the Rams finally looked like more their early-season selves even in a bitter OT loss at Wyoming last Monday, when some questionable calls would eventually disqualify main threat David Roddy, who scored 23 points but wasn’t on the floor in the late going.
Though we suspect Niko Medved will be working more on defense in the run-up to tonight after the Rams have been burned in consecutive games by 45-point (UNLV’s Bryce Hamilton) and 35-point (Wyoming’s Hunter Maldonado) efforts, which might make SDSU leading scorer Matt Bradley’s eyes as big as saucers tonight at Moby.
One Man Show?
Averaging 16 points per game, Bradley has been Brian Dutcher’s only consistent threat and lone double-digit scorer. The Aztecs’ offense badly misfired in recent losses to fellow Mountain West contenders Boise and Utah State.
The under is 9-3 in Colorado State’s last 12 games, and we could be in for another rock fight tonight. If the Rams’ defense can limit Bradley, the Azte offense hasn’t found a viable second option.
