This will be the second meeting of the season between the Friars and Bluejays, and we’re expecting a tighter affair than the first. Creighton earned an 84-64 home win on January 14 as Ryan Kalkbrenner and Steven Ashworth each scored 20 points.
That was an outlier game for Creighton’s offense in a couple different ways. The Bluejays shot 43.8-percent from three-point range in that one. The 14 made three-pointers was the most Creighton has made in a game this season.
The 71 possessions that we saw in the first meeting made that the fastest-paced game Creighton has played during Big East action.
The only team that Creighton has played a faster game with since mid-November was Alabama, who leads the entire country in adjusted tempo.
So Creighton made the most three-pointers it has all season in a game that was played at an unusually-fast pace, and we “only” saw 148 total points in that first meeting.
We’re expecting some scoring regression in this one, and oddsmakers seemingly agree. The one area where Creighton can replicate success from that first meeting is on defense, where the Bluejays are one of the best in the Big East.
Creighton’s defense held the Friars to 38.2-percent shooting from the floor. Creighton’s defense is top-30 in the country in efficiency, effective field goal shooting allowed, free throw attempts allowed, three-point shooting allowed, two-point shooting allowed and assist rate allowed.
The 7-foot-1 Kalkbrenner finished with six blocks in that first contest.

In Big East play, Providence is last in the conference in assist rate and last in turnover rate. The Friars are turning the ball over on 20.3-percent of their possessions in conference play.
Sitting at 11-11 on the season, second-year head coach Kim English has begun the youth movement. This season was supposed to be built around Player of the Year candidate Bryce Hopkins, but he’s only played in three games all season after a failed return from a knee injury.
Kalkbrenner is likely going to enjoy his interior matchup against freshmen Oswin Erhunmwunse and Ryan Mela.
We’re expecting this game to be played in the post and not with 14 made three-pointers like the first one. Four of Creighton’s last five games have stayed under the total.
