Georgetown vs Providence Analysis

The Providence Friars (19-2, 9-1 Big East) are in the nation’s capital to square off against the Georgetown Hoyas (6-14, 0-9 Big East) in a Big East showdown. Tipoff is scheduled for noon inside Capital One Arena in Washington, DC.

The two longstanding rivals reside in different basketball orbits. The Friars have one loss in league play, while Georgetown is still looking for their first victory after nine tries.

Friars come off a hard-fought victory over St. John’s on Tuesday night. The Hoyas were competitive, but the Red Storm improved to 2-0 against the Hoyas this season with an 88-69 win.

The Hoyas are 6-7 on in-home games, allowing 76.8 points to the visitors. This season, the Friars are 5-1 on the road and an impressive 9-1 in Big East play. Providence is eighth in the Big East with 8.8 offensive rebounds per game, led by Nate Watson, averaging 2.0. The Friars won the last matchup 83-75 on Jan. 20. Al Durham scored 15 points to help lead the Friars to the win.

Friars On a Roll

Providence enters Capital One on Sunday riding a six-game winning streak. The Friars are 9-1 in conference play. Providence’s one loss came against the Marquette Golden Eagles.

Senior guard Al Durham averages 13.7 points and dished 3.2 assists per game. Nate Watson has scored 33 points in his last two games and is heating up at just the time.

Providence owns a 4-1 mark in their five conference road games. The Friars average 70.7 points and surrender 64.8 points to the opposition.

The Friars sit just inside the Top 50 at KemPom. Providence is ranked 49th among Division I programs in Ken Pomeroy’s ratings.

Hoyas Desperately Seeking Big East Win

Georgetown is searching for the program’s first Big East win of the season. The nine Big East games the Hoyas have lost can be attributed to the team defense that ranks 260th in the Adjusted Efficiency ratings at KemPom.

Georgetown was a 4.5-point dog in Thursday’s 90-77 home loss to St. John’s. The Hoyas have yet to earn a 2022 win. The program’s last victory came in December against Howard.

Georgetown’s top scorer and rebounder, freshman Aminu Mohammed made just 1 of 13 shots, matching his career-low with four points in the loss to the Johnnies.

“I’m very confident in him. He’s a warrior,” Hoyas coach Patrick Ewing said about his heralded freshman. “He’s got to learn when they have size on him what to do. They’re coming over to collapse on him. Sometimes he’s got to make the pass. Sometimes he’s got to make the shot.”

Donald Carey scored 23 points versus the uptempo Storm. The senior guard is averaging a career-high 13.7 ppg. Mohammed has scored at least 13 points in four out of his last five games. The frosh guard averages 13.9 points and leads the Hoyas in cleaning the glass averaging 7.9 rebounds per game.

Georgetown vs Providence Forecast

The Friars are nearly perfect 6-1 against the spread in their last seven road games. The Hoyas check-in at 3-7 ATS in their previous ten contests overall.

The Over has cashed at a 5-2 clip in Providence’s last seven tilts, and the Hoyas have gone north of the bookmakers closing total in nine of the team’s last 12 home games. The road team is 9-4 ATS in the previous 13 meetings between the two Big East schools.

Two weeks ago, these teams met at Providence. Carey and Kaiden Rice made a combined 10 of 16 shots from beyond the arc for Georgetown.
