Kansas vs Iowa State Analysis

These two teams top tier teams in the country and they definitely know each others style well enough to make this game entertaining. Kansas holds a big advantage in recent years going 38-15 vs. Iowa State since 1997 (including 20-4 at home), but Iowa State has holds the ATS advantage with a 31-21 record since 1997 (14-9 at Kansas dating back to 1997). In just the last three seasons, Kansas is 4-0 ATS & SU, and dominating at that, outscoring the Cyclones by over 23 PPG in the 3 season stretch.

Iowa State isn’t exactly an elite offensive unit, but that obviously is not the only that matters. Iowa State comes in with a 13-2 record, and they have covered 9 of their 15 games, and posting 71 PPG on the year, while putting up 63 on average in conference games. Iowa State comes in as the 6th best defense in the country and just inside the top-100 in average experience on the roster. Cyclones head coach Otzelberger is also 15-2 ATS against teams with a win percentage of 80% or higher.

Kansas sits towards the top in almost every category in D-1 basketball, they are #5 in offensive efficiency, #34 in defensive efficiency, while playing the 31st hardest schedule on the season. Kansas has done it on both sides of the ball, holding teams almost 6 points below their season average, while putting up over 83 PPG this year, including almost 86 points per game at home.

Both these teams have stepped up in the big moments this year and proved they can perform under pressure, when it counts. This is the 6th offense that Iowa State has played in the top 50, Iowa State’s defense held the other 5 opponents to 67.6 PPG on average, posting a 3-2 record, and covering 4 out of 5 games (Xavier – #20, Memphis – #36, Iowa – #3, Baylor – #4, Oklahoma – #37). Kansas is also the 6th defense that Iowa State has played in the top 50, and the 7th in the top 55. Against the top defensive units that they have played, they are averaging 69 PPG, resulting in a 4-2 SU record, on top of a 4-2 ATS record.

As I mentioned, Iowa State’s offense is the most feared unit by any means, but they do have the 2nd best defense that Kansas has faced on the year, and they have played some good teams, including 3 top-25 defenses, and 4 in the top-50. In those 4 games, Kansas is still putting up almost 75 PPG and they have won 3 of those 4 games, but split against the spread.

While defense is the main conversation when Iowa State is in the conversation, it is surprising to see that multiple trends favor the over in this game. When these two teams have matched up, 16 of the last 19 games at home have gone over the total, and they both have head coaches that favor the over.

While coach Otzelberger is 16-4 OU on the road in January as the coach of Iowa State. Iowa State also hold a 15-4 OU record on the road vs. teams that take 21+ 3 point shots in the last three years, they are 12-2 against those opponents that make 8 or more from beyond the arc, and the Cyclones are 46-19 over on the road against teams that shoot 48%+ on average dating back to 1997.

Opinion = I like Iowa State. Kansas is just 3-5 against the spread as a double-digit favorite, as well as the OVER.
