Michigan vs Maryland Analysis
Tuesday night’s Big Ten matchup between the Michigan Wolverines (7-7, 1-3 Big Ten) and the visiting Maryland Terrapins (9-8, 1-5 Big Ten) in Ann Arbor was anticipated to be a conference event between two ranked teams. Michigan has lost three in a row, while Maryland has dropped four of its last five. It isn’t a stretch to label this Crisler Center contest a must-win for the Wolverines. Maryland has been in a free-fall since the abrupt resignation of former head coach Mark Turgeon.
Maryland is the First of Three Winnable Games
Maryland lost their most recent contest to Rutgers on their home floor, which leads the Terps into tonight’s road contest against a desperate Michigan basketball bunch. The Terps are 1-5 in conference play and own a 9-8 record overall following Saturday’s loss to the Scarlet Knights. It was Rutgers first road win of the season and the first positive as a visitor since a 2020 March victory against Minnesota.
Maryland has been hit and miss since the departure of Turgeon. “We have to take it one possession at a time. And that’s been the message to our guys,” interim head coach Danny Manning told the media in Monday’s media session. Michigan has a record of 5-1 against the Terps in Ann Arbor. The only time Maryland defeated the Wolverines on their home court was four years ago, January 7, 2017.
The Terps are at full strength, unlike Howard and the Michigan player personnel. “We’re expecting all of their guys to be available to play, and if they’re not, we go from there… you got to prepare like they’re gonna put their best team out there on the court, and you make adjustments from there,” Manning noted in his presser on Monday.
The Wolverines earn the ‘Dub” with or without Dickinson
Michigan’s failed attempt at righting the program’s ship on Friday night in Champaign, Illinois against the Illini was without a primary game night contributor, center Hunter Dickinson, who was inactive due to an undisclosed medical issue. The Wolverines were also without the services of guard Brandon Johns Jr.
The status of Dickinson and key reserve Johns Jr. for tonight’s game at the Crisler Center are still question marks, according to the Detroit Free Press. Dickinson and Johns, who traveled to Illinois but did not play, we’re unable to fully participate in the team’s workout Sunday evening, according to associate head coach Phil Martelli and (1) reported by the Free Press. Their status for Tuesday hinged their participation in the five-on-five portion of Monday’s practice. The coaching staff has not yet reported the pairs’ participation level.
The Wolverines enter a portion of the schedule that offers an opportunity to breathe life into a team on life support. The Wolverines have a trio of winnable games coming up, including tonight versus Maryland, at Indiana, and against Northwestern.
Juwan Howard is in his third season as the head coach of his alma mater. After two seasons of over-the-top success, Howard hasn’t had any answers to the teams’ scuffles this season. The team was expected to compete for a Big 10 title and a national championship but check in with a 7-7 record that includes three conference losses.
Dickinson, the team’s 7-foot-1 center, scored 26 points and 11 rebounds en route to Michigan’s 84-73 victory last season at the Crisler Center. Eli Brooks is the only player other than Dickinson averaging double-digit scoring at 12.5 points per game. Caleb Houston sports a stat-line of 9.2 points per game and 4.5 rebounds.
Since recording three straight “Dubs” to tip off the season, the Wolverines have not looked like the team that closed last year or began the current campaign with three victories.
Michigan vs Maryland Prediction
Howard’s men don’t have to deal with a Kofi Cockburn tonight in their matchup against the Terps. Instead, freshman Moussa Diabate and Walk-On Jaron Faulds come up big and answer the bell in tonight’s must-win in front of a delighted Wolverine fan base. WagerTalk pick to click is a play on Michigan in a Wolverines double-digit wire-to-wire win over Danny Manning minus the Miracle.
