The No. 4 Big 10 Michigan Wolverines (2-0) play host to the Big East Seton Hall (2-0) Pirates on Tuesday, Nov 16, 2001, in Ann Arbor. In its seventh year, the 2021 Gavitt Tipoff Games is set up to be a classic. This early-season college basketball event became a reality in 2015, and this weekday Crisler Arena contest is just a prelude to what should be an exciting winter of Wolverine hoops. Two teams aim to remain perfect in the early 2021 campaign meeting for only the third time in the pairs storied hoops history.

Seton Hall takes the plunge into the waters of visitors for the first time this season after defeating Fairleigh Dickinson and Yale at the Prudential Center by a combined 80 points. Michigan earned their second ‘Dub” of the 2021-22 season with a 77-49 victory over the Prairie View A&M Panthers at the Entertainment and Sports Arena in Washington.

Don’t sleep on, nor consider the Wolverines victory over Prairie View, an HBCU located about 50 miles northwest of Houston, as a scheduled cupcake. The Panthers team is projected to challenge for the Southwestern Athletic Conference title this season. Prairie View A&M is 44-5 in the SWAC over the last three seasons.

Seton Hall Pirates

Much more is expected of this 2021-22 Pirates squad. Seton Hall had a forgettable COVID campaign a year ago, finishing with a 14-13 overall record. However, the Bucs returned three starters from the 2020 team and beamed a trio of transfers into South Orange, New Jersey, via the portal.

Senior leader Jared Rhoden was named to the preseason All-Big East First Team is gaining his footing while recovering from an offseason ankle injury. Hall turned to several quality reserves to handle Rhoden’s responsibilities in the team’s season-opener against Fairleigh D. The Pirates efficiently handled FDU, earning a victory with a 93-49 rout of the Knights.

Transfers Alexis Yetna and Kadary Richmond picked up the slack of the inactive Rhoden, scoring 15 and 13 points in wins over FDU and Yale, respectively. Rhoden was back in action in the Pirates second 2021 tilt scoring eight points off the bench. Rhoden is the muscle for the Pirates, and he offers evidence of such by leading the team in rebounds. Junior forward Tyrese Samuel teams with Rhoden to keep the glass clean of second-chance points. Myles Cale is the outside scoring threat, and while his 50 percent shooting from distance is unsustainable through the entire season, that is what he has accomplished in the first two games of the Seton Hall basketball season.

The Hall receives solid minutes from ex-Harvard hoopster Bryce Aiken. Yetna, a senior transfer from France, provides the Bucs with the ability to stretch opposing defenses as a sharpshooter from distance.

Michigan Wolverines

Michigan will be hard-pressed to improve on last year’s 23-5 overall mark. However, it doesn’t hurt that Eli Brooks and Hunter Dickinson are wearing Michigan colors to keep the chances of winning the Big 10 with a perfect conference mark a reality. In addition, Blue welcomed DeVante’ Jones to the program for his basketball talents and uncanny ability to lead and transfer experience and confidence to younger players.

Jones will be asked in many ways to mentor the youth of this Wolverines roster. Youngsters Caleb Houstan and Moussa Diabate are just a pair of contributors for a young Michigan team that has quality, albeit young, depth.

Michigan has a significant advantage in the paint against Seton Hall. Look no further than sophomore center Hunter Dickinson. The 7’1″ center is the team leader in points and rebounds, averaging 19 and eight, respectively. In addition, Eli Brooks is the critical piece to the success of this Michigan squad in March. Senior guards who perform at an experienced and elite level are the constant of nearly every past Men’s Championship team.

Head coach Juwan Howard has been everything a tradition-rich college basketball program wants in a bench boss. Howard has college championship experience, and his credibility as one of the school’s Fab Five gives the program a recruiting edge that most campus locker rooms don’t have.

Franz Wagner, Mike Smith, Isaiah Livers, Chaundee Brown, and Austin Davis were significant losses from last year’s 23-5 team. Transfer DeVante Jones (Coastal Carolina) and freshman Caleb Houstan, Moussa Diabate, Kobe Bufkin, Frankie Collins, and Isaiah Barnes bring in all those who departed. The youthful contributions of freshman Diabate (who leads the team in blocks) and frontcourt sensation Terrance Williams II and his 11.5 points per game on 50 percent shooting from the floor provide Houstan with the room to create.

The Maizenbrew crew do a bang-up job of covering Wolverines across all sports, and their take on the incoming Ann Arbor frosh offer evidence of their basketball savvy. For example, the Michigan Wolverines community portal contributor Kellen Voss wrote, “The Michigan Wolverines’ men’s basketball team has lived up to their preseason hype so far, beating a good Buffalo team in the season opener before routing Prairie View A&M this weekend. And in each one of those games, Michigan’s freshmen have stepped up to provide meaningful minutes.”

“Five-star recruits Caleb Houstan and Moussa Diabate have already proven to be key parts of the rotation, while Kobe Bufkin and Frankie Collins are fighting for backcourt minutes off the bench,” added Voss.

Seton Hall will be up to the challenge of playing 40 total minutes with the depth of the Wolverines. The less-than of this Michigan squad is lack of experience closing out quality foes. Until this team is better at knocking down critical free throws at the end of games, there will always be the nagging hiccup that keeps pundits from qualifying this Wolverines roster as the best of the Big 10 and a capable Final Four qualifier.

The Pirates scoring average of nearly 90 points per game isn’t real. However, this Hall troupe doesn’t shy away from physical play and what is real with the Pirates is their ability to control the tempo and defend. The latter is an asset that always gives a talented group of hoopsters a chance to win.

This early-season non-conference contest is must-see TV. This Gavitt Tipoff tilt is Michigan’s toughest November test. None of the Wolverines’ scheduled opponents are ranked in the preseason top 25. Seton Hall is the highest-rated program that Michigan faces this month. KenPom ranks Seton Hall in the 50th slot of Division I programs this 2021-22 season. The value-packed investment from this Gavitt event in Ann Arbor is a play on the visiting Pirates and near baker’s dozen points that come along with supporting the dog tonight.

Michigan vs Seton Hall Analysis from The GoldSheet

The Wolverines have seen center Hunter Dickinson average 19 points and eight rebounds through two games, which included a strong performance against MAC contender Buffalo in the opener. Freshmen Caleb Houstan, Moussa Diabate and Kobe Bufkin have all found ways to impress, while Coastal Carolina transfer DeVante Jones has averaged five rebounds and five assists in taking the reins of Juwan Howard’s attack upon arrival. Although the Bulls made some nice runs, they never really challenge Michigan the way Seton Hall is expected to.

Despite losing center Sandro Mamukelashvili, the Pirates have started the season off impressively with blowouts of Yale and Fairleigh Dickinson by a combined margin of 173-93. The Pirates have to hope USF transfer Alexis Yetna and former Harvard standout Bryce Aiken can stay healthy this season to support Myles Cale and Jared Rhoden. With games against Michigan and Ohio State on tap tonight and next Monday, Seton Hall can emerge as a major player on the national scene by pulling a couple of upsets. Third-year sophomore Tyrese Samuel is averaging 13 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.
