MSU vs Michigan Analysis

Michigan is one of the most disappointing teams in college basketball thus far sitting at just 10-7, but they have won three-straight games heading into East Lansing. Michigan State, on the other hand, is one of the more pleasantly surprising teams sitting at No. 10 in the rankings with a 15-4 record, but a loss against Michigan at home could break down everything they’ve built up so far.

Go Green

The Spartans continue to produce as one of the most well-rounded teams in the country ranking in the top-30 nationally in both offensive and defensive efficiency. The Spartans do have one glaring weakness on their resume and that’s turning the ball over. Michigan State has been dreadful when it comes to turnovers in recent years and 2022 is no different with a turnover rate that’s 281st in the country.

Gabe Brown and Max Christie lead the Spartans as the only players averaging double digit scoring numbers this season, and both can be relied on at the free throw line late in the game if this is a tight game.

Go Blue

Fortunately for the Spartans, the glaring weakness on their resume is something that Michigan probably can’t take advantage of. The Wolverines’ defense ranks 338th nationally in forcing turnovers.

Michigan will rely on its offense to remain efficient, led by center Hunter Dickinson who is shooing 63% from inside the arc on the year. The supporting cast of Moussa Diabate, Caleb Houstan, Eli Brooks and DeVante Jones will have to step up if they want a shot at pulling the upset on the road in this one.
