New Mexico vs Air Force Betting Analysis
Both teams are coming off some tough losses with Air Force losing by 30 at San Jose State and New Mexico dropping a double-overtime thriller against Nevada.
The Lobos have now played three overtime periods in their last two games, so fatigue (particularly on the defensive end) may be a factor in the second half of this one. According to KenPom, New Mexico is No. 332 in the country in bench usage this season.
Head coach Richard Pitino has kept a thin rotation, but that might catch up to the Lobos in the second half of the conference schedule after four players logged 43+ minutes on Monday against the Wolf Pack.
Lobos Shine With Consistent Offense
We’ll see what happens to their legs down the road, but for now, New Mexico might have the best pair of guards in the Mountain West with former transfers Jamal Mashburn, Jr. and Jaelen House combining for almost 37 points per game.
The Lobos’ offense has been well-balanced through out the course of the season, shooting above the national average from two-point range, three-point range and the free throw line.
That unit will be looking to attack an Air Force defense that has allowed 70+ in seven of its eight conference games.
Falcons Force Slow Pace
On the other side, the modified Princeton offense that Joe Scott runs should have some success against New Mexico’s interior defense. Air Force is shooting 55.4-percent from two-point range.
New Mexico has the league’s worst two-point defense, allowing opponents to shoot 57.2-percent from inside the arc in conference play. New Mexico plays at the fastest tempo in the conference, while Air Force plays at the slowest.
New Mexico vs Air Force Prediction
Last season, Air Force games averaged just over 63 possessions per game. The Lobos were able to coax the Falcons into games with 66 and 73 possessions.
The 73-possession game (which had 168 points), was the fastest Air Force played in any game last season. So if there’s any Mountain West team that can force the Falcons out of their slow-moving shell, it’s the Lobos.
