Oklahoma State vs NC State Predictions
- Oklahoma State Cowboys -3.5 vs NC State Wolfpack
- Total: 140.5 Points
- The over is 19-9 in Oklahoma State’s last 28 games.
Circa of Las Vegas opened the Oklahoma State Cowboys as 3-point neutral-site favorites with a total of 137.5 points. The spread in the Mohegan Sun Arena contest had held serve when this game preview went to press. The over/under moved north of the opening total two-and-one-half points overnight. The initial 137.5 climbed to 140 points.
The ACC North Carolina State Wolf Pack and Big 12 Oklahoma State Cowboys are scheduled to meet at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut on Wednesday, Nov 17 at 7:00pm ET in a Basketball Hall of Fame showcase tournament matchup. NC State (3-0) has wins over Central Connecticut, Central Connecticut with a 79-65 final, Colgate 77-74, and Bucknell Bucknell 88-70. Oklahoma State (3-1) has a loss against the school’s three wins in 2021 with the lone defeat against Oakland 56-55, with a 88-45 win versus UT Arlington, Prairie View A&M by a 72-59 final, and yesterday’s early tipoff against UMass Lowell by an 80-58 final.
North Carolina State Wolfpack
The Wolfpack are scoring an average of 81.3 points per game. The ‘Pack are shooting 47.3% overall but a mere 28.2% from behind the 3-point arc, with the team’s leading scorer Dereon Seabron averaging nearly 20 points per game. Teammate Casey Morsell averages 17.5 ppg while also owning the team’s best assists per game stat. Seabron is averaging 2.0 assists per game.
The Wolfpack are playing a large number of isolation offensive sets in the halfcourt and, as a result, are averaging only eight assists per game. In addition, NC State is turning the ball over at a small percentage giving the rock away 6.5 times per contest.
Defensively NC State has surrendered an average of 72.0 points per game, opponents are shooting 45.8 percent from the field, and the Wolf Pack grab 27.5 rebounds per game. NC State’s Seaborn is grabbing 10.5 bounds per game.
North Carolina State will play without Thomas Allen and Manny Bates, well Greg Gantt is listed as questionable.
Oklahoma State Cowboys
The Cowboys average 78 points per game on 45.8 percent shooting from the field overall and 29.1 percent behind the three-point line. Bryce Thompson and Moussa Cisse lead OSU in scoring averaging just over 10 points per game. In addition, Isaac Likekele tops all of the Cowboys player personnel with an average of 4.3 assists each outing.
The Cowboys are stingy about giving away free rather than earned points. The Pokes surrender a mere 54.5 points per game on average. Oki State ranks 24th in the nation in defensive efficiency. Oklahoma State has allowed the team’s opponents to shoot 37.4 percent overall and 25.4 percent from beyond the arc. The OSU foes are grabbing an average of 29.0 rebounds per game.
The pressure defense that is an in-your-face scheme is a tough nut to crack in the season’s early stages. The Cowboys are averaging 13.3 steals and over four blocked shots per contest. The Cowboys’ lone loss to the Oakland Grizzlies isn’t a bad loss. KenPom ranks the Horizon League Oakland squad in the top half of the 358 division I teams.
The Cowboys share the basketball and any team in all college hoops and have six players averaging between 7 and 10.5 points a game. In addition, Oki State is considered an elite college basketball defense and is just as tough to defend with moving pieces and parts that are practically interchangeable.
The deliberate North Carolina State offense and the diligent team as a whole don’t turn the ball over. In turn, the teams’ technical position defensively limits dribble drives and prides itself on challenged jump shots regardless of where the opposing team’s shooter is on the court.
Both teams are playing the second leg of a back-to-back and logically will play at a slower tempo today than in the first round of the tournament. The ‘Pack has turned the ball over on just 12.3 percent of its possessions, ranking 10th-best in Division I. Conversely, the Cowboys have played a pair of teams considered uptempo, and the results find the Cowboys turning the ball over in 24.2 percent of their possessions.
Both head coaches and their staff spoke to the press about being more conscience about valuing possessions after the first round Tuesday contests. As well, expect that both will be cognitively alert to being more deliberate with the team’s halfcourt sets instead of recklessly playing every rebound to attack in transition. Thus, the logical lean in this midweek non-conference contest is a play under the bookmakers’ total of 140.
