Providence vs Northwestern Predictions

  • Providence Friars +1 vs Northwestern Wildcats
  • Total: 136 points
  • Prudential Center in Newark, NJ
  • 9:30pm ET / 6:30pm PT
  • Broadcast on ESPN+

Providence already has experience with playing a Big Ten team in a rock fight, and I think they may get another one here. The Friars beat Wisconsin at the Kohl Center last Monday in a game that saw 121 points, and we might be heading toward a similar show tonight.

The Wildcats are coming into this one as a little bit of an unknown after playing four cupcakes to start the season. Northwestern hasn’t been tested at all in their opening games with Eastern Illinois, High Point, New Orleans and Fairleigh Dickinson, but that should change this week as the ‘Cats face Providence, Wake Forest and Maryland.

If you like watching interior basketball, you’re probably going to enjoy this one. The Friars’ offense runs through 6-10 Nate Watson, who’s shooting 73.9-percent so far this season (34-of-46). The ‘Cats will counter with a pair of 6-10 big men, senior Pete Nance and junior Ryan Young.

Both teams should be able to counter the strengths of the other. Northwestern likes shooting threes, but Providence was No. 13 in the country in defending three-pointers last season. Northwestern was No. 292 in getting to the free throw line last year, so the ‘Cats probably won’t shoot too many of those. Northwestern was No. 335 in offensive rebounding rate, so there likely won’t be many second-chance opportunities. Northwestern has depth inside, so they can afford to be aggressive with Watson. Watson is 9-for-21 at the free throw line this season, so look for the ‘Cats to dish out some fouls instead of giving up easy buckets.

All of this is pointing me toward another under. Personally, I prefer to play more 1H unders than full game unders. At the time of posting, 1H under 64 (-110) is widely available. Providence is holding opponents to 30.3 points in the first half this season, while Northwestern is holding its opponents to 29.8 points in the first half. Throw them in an unfamiliar arena, and we’ve got the recipe for a slow start.

Providence vs Northwestern Analysis from The GoldSheet

Chris Collins has Northwestern off to a 4-0 start, but we’re about to find out just how good the Wildcats really are as they take the floor at Newark’s Prudential Center for this Legends Classic matchup. Although Seton Hall isn’t the mix here, there is a Big East team in the field that plays in the building every year and therefore has a major advantage. Providence wasn’t originally supposed to be in this field but joined Georgia in replacing UCLA and Texas, who both dropped. The Friars already have a victory over Wisconsin in the Gavitt Games, prevailing in Madson.

Northwestern is playing its first game outside Evanston and has played Fairleigh Dickinson, New Orleans, High Point and Eastern Illinois, so this is a significant step up in competition. Northwestern won the most recent meeting between these schools back in 2019 and has talent back in guard Boo Buie and forwards Pete Nance and Ryan Young, but playing nothing but cupcakes thus far should cost them in this matchup. Friars bigs Nate Watson and Noah Horchler will be tough to handle. Meanwhile, Indiana transfer Aljami Durham has hit the ground running and should be plenty familiar with how Collins’ Wildcats intend to defend him. Getting points, riding Providence is the way to go. Play Providence.
