Purdue vs Nebraska Analysis
#7 Purdue Boilermakers are set to face Nebraska at home on Friday night. A Purdue team that has dominated straight up, but has failed to cover their massive spreads, and they come into this game as a 20 point favorite. Purdue may be #7 in the nation, but currently, they are also #7 in the B10, with just a 2-2 conference record. They have won 80% of their games, for a record of 12-3, but two of those three losses came against the conference. Purdue is 8-1 straight up at home (4-5 against the spread) and 4-1 in the last five (0-4-1 against the spread), on top of winning 11 of the 15 meetings against Nebraska dating back to 1997 (including 6-0 at home). Purdue is also coming off back-to- back games over the total, and at home following two games of that caliber, they are 36-13 against the spread.
Purdue Keeps Rolling
Purdue has dominated this season on the offensive side of the ball. They sit at #1 in offensive efficiency, #5 in PPG (85.1), #3 in FG% (50.68%), #3 in 3PT% and #8 in assists per game. They know how to score, and they know how to share the ball better then most teams in D-1. The offense can also keep the possessions alive, being the #8 team in offensive rebounding percentage, stemming from being the #17 team in terms of average height. Purdue’s defense hasn’t been as good as the offense, but they have still been impressive, sitting at #67 in efficiency rankings, while being the #17 team in block %. Purdue has faced the 67th hardest schedule in D-1 but they are in the top-25 in terms of bench contribution to minutes, making them one of the deepest teams in the country that can rotate in fresh players at their convenience.
Nebraska Searching for First Conference Win
Nebraska finds themselves still searching for their first win in the conference, starting 0-6. Yet this team has gotten hot in the last couple of games, even though they haven’t been able to come away with too many straight up wins, they have covered four out of their last five games, keep the games close (when you consider in the lines), regardless of the fact that they are allowing 85 PPG to B10 opponents. Although, they are just 2-2 against the spread on the road, and they haven’t won a game all year as an underdog, and they look to change that trend quickly. The one big advantage that Nebraska holds is the tempo, Purdue is not one of the faster teams out there, but Nebraska loves to keep the pace high (#20 in tempo in D-1), and if they can control the tempo they may have a chance to cover, even with the depth on Purdue’s bench.
Nebraska has played one of the more difficult schedules in the country, so that isn’t anything new. Although winning would be something new against top-caliber teams, combined they are 0-17 against top-100 offenses and defenses. They have played 8 offenses in the top-100 , they are losing those games by an average of 15.125 PPG, allowing over 87 PPG to those opponents! While they are 0-8 against these offensive powerhouse teams, they split those eight games against the spread, going 4-4, but covering the last three in a row. On the other side of the ball, Nebraska has played nine games against top-100 defenses, and they are against 0-9 straight up. Against these nine top defensive teams, Nebraska has lost by just over 17 PPG on average, putting up just 66.5 PPG, but they have covered three out of the last four.
Purdue vs Nebraska Prediction
Opinion – I don’t like either side enough to give out a play, but I think Nebraska has a real shot to cover this game. Purdue has failed to cover six out of the last seven as a double digit favorite, and Nebraska is coming off a stretch of difficult games, and they covered four of the last five, including games against Ohio State, Michigan State & Illinois. Nebraska (+20)
