Richmond vs St Bonaventure Analysis

St. Bonaventure was the heavy favorite in the preseason to earn the A-10 title. The Bonnies collected all first-place votes from the conference coaches to sit atop the league standings when it was time to begin dancing.

A portion of tonight’s game drama is that the Spiders were the second choice in the preseason poll. Richmond was second in the preseason poll. The reality of the A-10 conference entering the first Friday of February finds both programs three-game back of first place with first place Davidson, Dayton, Saint Louis, VCU, and George Mason, who all share or stand alone in the first two slots of the league.

Two tradition-rich basketball programs from the eastern seaboard and the Atlantic 10 conference make it feel like March has arrived. Four points favor the Spiders at press time of this A-10 betting preview in a matchup that screams coin-flip.

Bring back, Bring back Oh, bring back my Bonnie …

The underdog is 5-0 against the spread in the last five meetings between the two A-10 programs. St Bonaventure is 1-5 ATS in their previous six games on the road. One of those losses straight up and against the number when conference leader Davidson won its seventh consecutive road game beating the Bonnies 81-76 on Tuesday night.

St Bonaventure’s have not been as offensive as the public expected this season. They continue to fall south of the Over-Under proposition at the sportsbooks. The Bonnies have been an 80 percent proposition to the Under across their last ten games as the bookmakers dog cashing at an 8-2 clip, under to overs, as the matchups puppy.

Jaren Holmes, whose 15 points per game heading into the matchup led the Bonnies, finished 1-for-10 from the field in a game that was nip-and-tuck throughout.

The defending A-10 champion Bonnies are a long shot to climb through the five teams ahead of them in the standings and earn the expected repeat. However, the Achilles of this Bonaventure squad is the inability to shoot the 3-ball. In truth, the Bonnies’ quandary to shoot for an acceptable percentage from the field has in some fashion and form prevented them from meeting any of the team’s preseason expectations.

Home Court Advantage?

The home team and hopeful Spiders check-in at a profitable 4-1 ATS mark for their backers. In Richmond’s last five games, where they closed as the betting favorite, the Spiders’ player personnel padded the faithful fan’s bottom-line with encouragement and financial support with a paid trip to the sportsbook counter.

The game totals in Richmond matchups continue to go final south of the bookmakers’ closing totals. The Spiders have cashed to the Under at a perfect 4-0 across the team’s last four games as the book’s favorite.

The Spiders fought off a challenging non-conference schedule with quality wins over Toledo and North Carolina State. The Spiders’ loss to Saint Joseph to begin league play set the tone for what has been a disappointing season in Richmond. If the defeat at the hands of a Hawks program that is rebuilding wasn’t disparaging enough, it was how the Spiders lost the game by 27-points as the home favorite.

Richmond vs St Bonaventure Forecast

St Bonaventure and Richmond are fighting to be Big Dance relevant, and tonight’s winner is still in the conference title hunt. At the same time, the loser will huddle up and plan what it will take to be an at-large birth in the 2022 College Basketball National Championship.

The Bonnies head coach Mark Schmidt has settled as the season has worn on. St Bonaventure sags into a depressing zone defense from start to finish on game night, hoping the opponent has a pedestrian shooting night, giving them a chance to earn a “Dub.”

For the seventh time this season, the Bonnies fall short of the contest goal, offering little to no resistance to opposing perimeter shooters. The result is a rinse and repeat of Tuesday’s event at Davidson; the Bonaventure group falls short road underdogs.

Richmond vs St Bonaventure Preview from GoldSheet

The preseason favorites in the Atlantic 10 have struggled at roughly the halfway point of the conference season, while Davidson and Dayton have gotten off to the type of start that was expected out of the Bonnies and Spiders.

The Spiders have won four of their past five games (4-1 against the spread) and come off a 74-57 road win at Duquesne on Tuesday. Richmond is 5-2 since Jan. 5, losing one-possession games to Davidson and VCU. The Spiders rank fourth in the A-10 in scoring at 73.5 points per game.

The Bonnies have alternated wins and losses since defeating the Rams by 20 points on Jan. 14, suffering road setbacks at Dayton and George Mason, defeating Duquesne and Saint Joseph’s and suffering an 81-76 loss at home against Davidson last time out as they surrendered their second-largest scoring output of the season.

St Bonaventure has only dropped consecutive games once this season, doing so in neutral-site affairs against UConn and Virginia Tech prior to a lengthy COVID pause. The Bonnies are 2-2 in true road games and have only covered the spread in one of those contests, while Richmond is 7-3 at the Robins Center but have dropped three of four outright.

The Bonnies have won five-straight in this series and have won the rebounding battle in four of those five games. Rebounding will likely be the story once again as St Bonaventure is 290th in rebounding margin this season. The Bonnies were beaten badly on the boards by Davidson on Feb. 1.

Books are expecting a tight, one-possession game between teams that played to a 69-66 result in Olean last time they saw each other on Jan. 2, 2021, when Kyle Lofton played hero with a game-winning 3-pointer with seconds to spare. The Bonnies star went through a major shooting slump (22-for-64) in January but scored 19 points, grabbed nine rebounds and delivered eight assists and four steals against Davidson on Tuesday, potentially signaling the end of his struggles.
