South Carolina vs Mississippi State Analysis
Mississippi State is 16-11 on the season, and 15-12 against the spread. The Bulldogs average 72 points per game while giving up 66.1 points per game. Mississippi St is 1-7 on the road after picking up their first road win at Missouri over the weekend.
South Carolina is 16-10 on the season, and 14-11 against the spread. The Gamecocks average 70.3 points per game while giving up 70.3 points per game. South Carolina is 10-4 at home and 9-5 against the spread in those home games.
Bulldogs Finally Get One
We don’t have to worry anymore about the Bulldogs going winless as a visitor in calendar 2022 after finally winning one on the road at Mizzou last Saturday. But everyone is beating the Tigers these days, and Ben Howland’s bunch had lost four straight previous…not the sort of stuff that a fringe bubble team needs to keep the Selection Committee interested.
The nitty-gritty thus really starts now for Mississippi State, which likely finds itself NIT-bound again without a fast finish. The trouble on Wednesday night is that not only are the Bulldogs back on the road, but Frank Martin’s Gamecocks are making their own run at the bubble with wins in six of their last nine in the combative SEC.
Eyes on the Bubble
Now with a signature win last Saturday vs. LSU after previously displaying a bit of magic (James Reese V’s halfcourt buzzer beater in OT last week at Ole Miss), South Carolina suddenly looks like a team with March ambitions.
Some regional observers think “The Bouncer” (Martin) is doing a job almost on par with the Final Four run of a few years back, squeezing out wins despite lacking a true go-to threat, using a collective approach instead with components like the aforementioned Reese, Washington transfer G Erik Stevenson (11.4 ppg), and jr. G Jermaine Cousinard (11 ppg) all glad to take the ball if needed in crunch time.
That might be the difference between these teams, as the ball is almost always in the hands of G Iverson Molinar (18.3 ppg) for Mississippi State; too much, maybe, and not taking enough advantage of 6-9 Tar Heel transfer Garrison Brooks, who has been a mild disappointment at 11.3 ppg as the Bulldog offense functions mostly at Molinar’s whim.
South Carolina vs Mississippi State Prediction
Though Martin did lose to Howland at Starkville on Feb. 1 (a game in which Brooks scored a season-high 18), we suspect that was more of an outlier, as Mississippi State rarely goes on 34-11 runs like it did late in the first half to put that matchup in the freezer by halftime.
But that’s also consistent with the Bulldogs’ home prowess that has not resonated away from the Hump. Thus, a vote for the collective, and payback, in Columbia. We recommend backing South Carolina as a small home ‘dog on Wednesday night vs Mississippi State.
