TCU has been able to stay afloat without starting point guard Frankie Collins, but Monday’s dance with Houston provides a much different challenge than the one the Horned Frogs have previously been facing.
It’s a new year, but the same story for Kelvin Sampson’s Cougars. Houston’s defense leads the country in effective field goal shooting allowed and two-point shooting allowed, while sitting top-30 in efficiency, turnover rate, three-point shooting allowed and steals.
Opponents are shooting 37.5-percent from two-point range against the Cougars, which is 13.5-percent below the national average.
Houston has not allowed more than 55 points in any of the Cougars’ ten wins this season. These teams met twice last season with TCU earning a home win over the Cougars, and Houston returning the favor in the Big 12 Tournament.
Even in TCU’s home win, the Horned Frogs were held without a field goal for over eight minutes in the first half.
In the conference tournament rematch, TCU shot 23.3-percent from the floor, including 2-for-20 from three-point range.

TCU’s offense is likely going to struggle, but the Horned Frogs are no slouch on the defensive end. In the four games without Collins, TCU has held its opponents to an average of 62.3 points per game, and that includes contests against Arizona and Kansas State.
The Horned Frogs are No. 25 in defensive efficiency and opponents are shooting just 27.7-percent from three-point range against TCU.
The Horned Frogs’ bench scored just ten points in the 63-62 win over the Wildcats on Saturday. If the three-pointers aren’t falling, we’re not sure how TCU is going to be able to generate offense against the Cougars’ top-ranked defense.
