Texas vs San Jose State Predictions

  • Texas Longhorns -27.5 vs San Jose State Spartans
  • Total: 130.5 points
  • Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas
  • 6:00pm ET / 3:00pm PT
  • Broadcast on Longhorn Network

This is a lot of points to be laying in a game that figures to be played at a slow pace. Chris Beard played at a slow pace at Texas Tech, and that doesn’t appear to be changing after his first few games in Austin. In Beard’s five seasons at Texas Tech, the Red Raiders averaged No. 271 in adjusted tempo. Through the first three games, Texas is No. 352 this season.

That pace is perfectly fine with new San Jose State coach Tim Miles. In his seven seasons at Nebraska, Miles’ teams were outside the top-200 in tempo five times. Through their first three games this season, San Jose State is No. 284 in adjusted tempo and has played at a remarkably consistent 66, 65 and 66 possessions.

It’s no secret that oddsmakers rely on KenPom’s numbers early in the season, and he’s got this game lined at Texas -26, which is why the point spread is where it is. But Bart Torvik makes this game Texas -22.5 and I agree more with that number. If 7-0 Ibrahima Diallo can protect the rim and force the Longhorns to stay outside the paint, San Jose State should be able to hold Texas to a respectable number in this contest.

Both teams performed a hockey line switch during the offseason, turning over large portions of their roster. Coach Beard will likely continue to experiment with his rotations as he gets his team ready for Big XII play. Ten players saw double-digit minutes against Northern Colorado on Wednesday (only a 13-point win). I would expect a similar gameplan as Texas tries to mesh its hold-over players (Courtney Ramey and Andrew Jones), with new players (Timmy Allen, Marcus Carr and Tre Mitchell).

Texas vs San Jose State Analysis from The GoldSheet

Well by now it’s apparent that Tim Miles is providing a nice upgrade on the bench at San Jose State, which comes as no surprise to Mountain West onlookers. Though only 1-2 straight-up, the Spartans have three handy covers in their back pockets, and look for an awfully long time in each of their last two starts that they were on the verge of upsetting both Stanford and Cal Baptist. All of this while still awaiting returning MW high-scorer Richard Washington, whose eligibility suspension from the NCAA continues in the appeal process.

Fear not, Order of Sparta, as Miles has loaded up his roster with power conference transfers who have upgraded the overall talent quotient at the alma mater of John Carlos and Tommie Smith, in particular frontliners 7-footer Ibrahima Diallo (ex-Ohio State), 6-9 Shon Robinson (ex-Ole Miss), 6-9 Tibet Gorener (ex-Arizona), & 6-7 Trey Anderson (ex-Ole Miss), while holdover guards Omari Moore and Trey Smith are combining for nearly 28 points per game.

Meanwhile the same process, albeit at a higher level, seems to be going a tad slower at Texas, with new HC Chris Beard still looking for proper combinations to best feature his top-tier transfers ex-Utah F Timmy Allen, ex-UMass big Tre Mitchell, and ex-Minnesota G Marcus Carr. Not to mention looking for some consistency beyond the arc, where Texas only hit 4-of-18 on Wednesday, helping prevent it from closing the back door on Big Sky Northern Colorado. Play San Jose State.
