The No. 4 Wolverines enter this game off of a stinging loss to Seton Hall. Before that they had a decent challenge from #82 Buffalo but came out on top with little worry. UNLV is undefeated but they have played a fairly easy schedule. They defeated #145 North Dakota State by 2 and #120 Cal by 3.
One thing is for sure, the Rebels play great defense. They have held opponents to 37% field goal percentage while allowing only 61 points per game. That is really impressive no matter who the competition is. Michigan shoots 47% from the field so it will be interesting to see if UNLV can hold down such a highly-ranked team. Despite their ranking, Michigan is a turnover-prone team. 11 turnovers led to their demise against Seton Hall after leading most of the game. Michigan is also not a good offensive rebounding team, so keeping their field goal percentage in the upper 40’s will be key to winning. Against Seton Hall, the Michigan defense was awful defending the 3pointers and literally left Seton Hall shooters unguarded so they could climb back into the game. This probably will not be such a problem here as UNLV is a 36% shooting team that probably can not climb back in it if they fall behind by a big margin. UNLV shot only 20% beyond the arc in their win over North Dakota State.
I think fouls will be the key to this game. UNLV plays a tight defense and fouls a lot. Michigan is not know for being a good free throw shooting team but against Seton Hall they shot 83%. UNLV gets 58% of its offensive production from four Seniors: Bryce Hamilton, Royce Hamm Jr., Michael Nuga and Marvin Coleman. If any of them get into foul trouble this game could get out of hand as UNLV has almost no depth.
My numbers have this line right at 14 which was the opening line. I think after the defensive let down against Seton Hall, Juwan Howard will have his team ready to clamp down defensively against a team that is not a good shooting team. UNLV should not be able to shut down this high-ranked team like have have against lower ranked teams. If UNLV gets into foul trouble playing this type of defense you can turn out the lights. Michigan is a better free throw shooting team than people think and I think they can shoot 40-44% FG even against this defense. In the end, Michigan should be able to cover this spread.

UNLV vs Michigan Analysis from The GoldSheet
It’s been a while since they were excited about hoops at UNLV. And after a 3-0 break from the gate for new HC Kevin Kruger, it might not be long until Floyd Mayweather, his posse and other local dignitaries begin to show up again to watch the Rebs. Kruger’s bunch moves down about a mile on Flamingo Road from the Thomas & Mack to the T-Mobile Arena for the nightcap of the doubleheader this evening, but we suspect it’s going to get a lot tougher for UNLV after narrow wins over a trio of middling foes. That’s because Michigan represents a big step up from early victims Gardner Webb, Cal, and North Dakota State, not to mention the Wolverines hitting Vegas angry after a bitter 2-point loss to Seton Hall in a rematch of the 1989 NCAA final on Tuesday night.
The Rebs have not had to deal with real size yet this season, but they will tonight against 7-1 Wolverine C Hunter Dickinson (18.7 ppg), and blue-chip 6-8 frosh Caleb Houstan, off of a poor shooting night vs. the Hall. Even at 3-0, UNLV still has the look of a work-in-progress for Kruger, who is trying to fit numerous transfers around returning top scorer Bryce Hamilton, who’s hitting for better than 17 ppg in the early going. But no one else is doing much, as the Rebs are only scoring 61 ppg, hitting barely 36% from the floor, and 21% beyond the arc, and have ye to play a road game this season. Those are hardly the sorts of numbers that will spook a top-ten opponent.
