UNLV vs San Jose State Betting Analysis
There’s a four-team race at the top of the Mountain West standings between San Diego State, Nevada, Boise State and Utah State, but (arguably) the two best players in the conference are outside of that quartet.
UNLV’s EJ Harkless and San Jose State’s Omari Moore will be looking to steal the show in Las Vegas on Tuesday night as the Rebels host the Spartans.
The first meeting between these two squads went to overtime on December 28 as San Jose State emerged with a 75-72 home victory. Moore had 15 points and seven assists in that contest, but went 0-for-6 from three-point range.
Very few teams have been able to slow down the senior point guard since then. Moore has scored 20+ points in four of his last five games, including 26 in a win over Air Force, 29 in a win over Wyoming and 27 in a win over Utah State.
Harkless has been equally hot for the Runnin’ Rebels. The Oklahoma transfer has found his stride in his first season in Las Vegas, averaging 24.5 points in UNLV’s last six games including a 33-point outburst against Wyoming last week.
Spartans Slow Pace Down
We’re looking at the Spartans plus the points for a variety of reasons in this contest. Let’s start with pace. San Jose State plays at one of the slowest tempos in the country.
Their average of 20.2 seconds per offensive possession is over two-and-a-half seconds longer than the national average. A slower tempo means possessions become more valuable, which makes getting seven points all the more attractive.
San Jose State is on the road here, but you could make a good case that they will have the fresher legs. The Spartans have not left the state of California since January 21.
UNLV is coming off a road back-to-back that saw them play at Wyoming (which is never fun), then San Diego State (which is also not much fun). The Spartans’ slower style of play also keeps them fresher. San Jose State hasn’t played in a game with more than 65 possessions since New Years Eve.
Rebels Need to Rebound Basketball
UNLV struggles to score in the interior, and that’s going to be a problem against one of the Mountain West’s best interior defenses.
The Rebels are shooting 49.3-percent from two-point range in conference play, and 7-0 Ibrahima Diallo is fantastic at patrolling the paint.
San Jose State held a 49-35 rebounding advantage in that first meeting, and that’s going to be a concern again here.
UNLV allows the highest offensive rebound rate in the conference, and San Jose State is No. 2 in the league in second-chance opportunities.
UNLV vs San Jose State Expert Prediction
Overall, UNLV is the more talented team, but the Spartans present a number of matchup issues that should allow them to keep this closer than the oddsmakers expect.
Prediction: San Jose State Spartans +7
