Utah State vs New Mexico Betting Analysis
With schools ranging from San Diego to Boise, the Mountain West has some of the toughest in-conference travel in the country.
The Lobos have proven that they don’t mind hitting the road and playing in tough environments. New Mexico has already won at SMU, at Saint Mary’s (No. 7 in KenPom), at Wyoming, and at San Diego State (No. 27 in KenPom).
The Lobos also have a neutral site win over a good San Francisco squad, and took Nevada to double overtime in Reno last week.
Lobos Like to Play Fast
The main reason for the Lobos’ strength on the road comes from their veteran backcourt of Jamal Mashburn Jr. (19.5 points per game) and Jaelen House (17.4 points per game).
New Mexico plays at the fastest tempo in the conference and relies on attacking the hoop to generate points.
The Lobos shoot the fewest three-pointers in the conference, which has also helped them become such a good road team. If you don’t rely on three pointers, the unfamiliar sight lines of an unfamiliar gym are less of a problem.
Utah State Relying On Three-Pointers Too Much?
After a red-hot start to the season, Utah State seems to be fading just a bit. The Aggie wins have mostly been nail-biters (by four against UNLV and one against San Jose State), while the losses have been blowouts (double-digit losses to Boise State, Nevada and San Diego State).
Utah State still leads the country in three-point shooting at a blistering 40.7-percent, but that number has been on the decline in recent weeks. New Mexico’s defense is top-25 in the country in defending the three-pointer, holding opponents below 30-percent this season.
The Aggies have the worst turnover rate in the conference, and that’s concerning against the veteran backcourt of House and Mashburn Jr.
Utah State vs New Mexico Expert Prediction
We’ll gladly take the points with a New Mexico squad that is more well rounded across the board. The Lobos shoot above the national average from two-point range, three-point range and the free throw line.
They don’t rely on many three pointers, so they don’t play high-variance games. The Lobos’ three losses this season have come by four, seven and three (the game they lost by seven was a one-point game with three minutes remaining).
Utah State has a few too many peaks and valleys right now. The Aggies’ offense is top-15 in efficiency and effective field goal percentage, but their defense is outside the top-125 in both of those categories.
Utah State is 4-2 in its last six games, but has not won the turnover battle in any of them. Grab the points with a veteran New Mexico squad.
Prediction: New Mexico Lobos +4
