Virginia Tech vs Virginia Analysis

The Virginia Tech Hokies (8-6, 0-3 ACC) square off against in-state and conference rival Virginia Cavaliers (9-6, 3-2 ACC) at John Paul Jones Arena, Charlottesville, Virginia, on Wednesday night. The ACC featured event is the second ESPN2 doubleheader following the SEC Florida Gators and the LSU Tigers in Gainsville. Virginia has an opportunity to pour salt in the Hokies’ wounds tonight. Virginia Tech is currently riding a four-game losing streak, and nothing would please the Cavaliers faithful more than extending that streak to five games. Westgate Race and Sportsbook opened the home team Cavaliers as 1.5-point home favorites with a total of 117 points. There was some interest early this morning on the home team resulting in the Westgate shop-raising the handicap on Virginia a half-point.

Hokies Looking Sluggish

Virginia Tech’s last ACC game was nearly a year ago. The Hokies defeated Wake Forest in a route closing the contest by the final score of 84-46 on February 27, 2021. Keve Aluma, Justyn Mutts, and Storm Murphy have to be perfect to earn the Hokies first conference win this season. The trio combines to score 48 percent of the team’s game points. They’re 0-5 when it allows at least 62 points and 8-1 when it defends to its skillset and contains opponents to less than 62 during a 40-minute game. VT has allowed just 58.7 points per game, ranking in the Top-20 of Division I. Tech has looked slow and sluggish following a 12-day COVID layoff. Leading scorer, Aluma, has seen his 3-point accuracy (35.1%) fall off the shelf and is shooting just 23.5% from distance this season.

Cavaliers Relying on Gardner

Virginia is coming off an ugly loss to league mate North Carolina. The Tar Heels put a beatdown on the Cavs in a 74-58 final. Virginia surrendered career highs of 29 points and 21 rebounds to Armando Bacot and was dominated on the glass from start to finish. Virginia’s offense is top-heavy relying on Jayden Gardner for scoring and defense, particularly defending the glass. Gardner averages 15.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game leading the team in both categories. Virginia’s 58-74 loss in Chapel Hill on Saturday was driven by North Carolina’s dominance on the glass. UNC outrebounded UVA 36-28, including an 11-7 edge in putbacks.

Virginia Tech vs Virginia Prediction

The Hokies’ five wins to open the season seem like a lifetime ago. And what began as a promising start to a supposed post-COVID campaign has faded. VT has lost six of their last nine, has postponed two games due to COVID issues, and remains winless in Atlantic Coast Conference action.  The WagerTalk pick to click is a play on the home team Virginia Cavaliers, to revenge the last meeting between these two interstate foes. Virginia earns a win and a cover in a game north of the bookmakers closing total.
