Air Force Football Preview 2023: Air Force Picks for Betting

Troy Calhoun has coached Air Force (AF) for 16 seasons. 

He’s on a roll, at 37-11 in his last 48 games.  The goal last year was to beat both Army and Navy for the 1^st time since 2016.  Mission accomplished.  Now it’s time to get to and win the Mountain West title.  In the ten years of having a title game, Air Force has appeared only once (0-1).

Air Force Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH

Their long time QB/RB combo will be absent for 2023. 

There has to be at least some drop in efficiency.  There’s a decent number of returning starters on defense, but sack production may drop.  The point defense was outstanding in 2022, and I’ll check to see if that changes for any reason.  The best news for Air Force is coaching continuity.

Air Force 2023 Predictions, Air Force Schedule:

Air Force has lost two straight to Utah State, which is a bit puzzling considering how poorly Utah State defends the run. 

With minimal returning experience (for Utah State), this needs to be a solid win. 

The first clue as to how Air Force’s new backfield is performing comes in game four, at San Jose State and again in game five, hosting SD St.  A

Air Force broke a long losing streak against SD St with a 13-3 win last season. 

A rested AF hopes for revenge when they host Wyoming next.  While my numbers likely have AF down a bit from 2022, the Falcons will be favored to be 6-0 heading into road games at Navy and Colo St, and favored again in games 9-11. 

In fact, it’s possible that the only time they will be in the underdog role will be at Boise on 11/25!  Are they up to the challenge?  Two for their three losses last year were as double-digit favorites.  All six of their losses the last two years have been when favored.

Air Force Football Bottom Line:

I’m worried about the QB/RB dynamic, but the Mountain West as a whole appears not as good, and that opens the door for this team to reach the title game.  I’ll call this 10-2 (my  scheduling grid says 9-3).  With a less dynamic QB, another upset is likely, but the defense should be good enough to give them a win shot in every game.

Air Force Football HANDICAPPING TIP:

Air Force is 58-36 ATS as a road dog but that won’t come into play until potentially the final game (Boise). 

I have no other notes at this time (4-0 ATS last year, but just 21-17 ATS the previous 14 seasons).
