Alabama Football Betting Preview | SEC Odds and Predictions

Alabama Football team mascot waves flag

For the first time since 2007, someone other than Nick Saban will be patrolling the Alabama football sidelines. Coach Saban’s retirement initially sent an exodus of talent out of Tuscaloosa, but new head coach Kalen DeBoer has been able to steady the ship with talented returning quarterback Jalen Milroe.

Our power ratings have Alabama favored in 11 of its 12 games this season, with the September 28 clash against Georgia as the lone exception. While we have the Crimson Tide favored in every other game, three of those are by less than a touchdown: At Tennessee, at LSU and at Oklahoma. Those near-coinflip games will likely decide Alabama’s status in the National Championship picture this season.

DraftKings has released early Game of the Year lines for seven of Alabama’s games this season:

  • Alabama -8.5 at Wisconsin
  • Alabama +4.5 at Georgia
  • Alabama -2.5 at Tennessee
  • Alabama -8.5 vs Missouri
  • Alabama +1 at LSU
  • Alabama -2 at Oklahoma
  • Alabama -14 vs Auburn

Generally speaking, we are higher on the Crimson Tide compared to the betting market in late-June. A staple of the Saban regime, Alabama will once again have some strategically-placed bye weeks through out the season. The Crimson Tide will enjoy a bye week before hosting Georgia at the end of September, a bye week before traveling to LSU in early November and an FCS opponent before traveling to Oklahoma.

Alabama Football Incoming Talent

When Coach Saban announced his retirement, there was a brief exodus out of Tuscaloosa. According to 247Sports, three of the nation’s top-six transfers came from Alabama during the offseason: Safety Caleb Downs went to Ohio State; Wide receiver Isiah Bond went to Texas; and quarterback Julian Sayin went to Ohio State.

Once Coach DeBoer was announced, his staff was able to reverse that trend and bring high-profile pieces back to Alabama. The Crimson Tide brought in three top-30 players: Offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor left Iowa; Offensive lineman Parker Brailsford from Washington; and defensive lineman LT Overton from Texas A&M.

Between incoming freshmen and those pieces in the transfer portal, 247Sports has Alabama’s class of incoming talent ranked No. 2 in the country behind Georgia. New offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan has been a staple in DeBoer’s coaching staff over the last five years, following him from Indiana to Fresno State to Washington to Alabama. Former South Alabama head coach Kane Wommack has been brought in to lead the defense after a very successful stint with the Jaguars.
