Alabama College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?

I can’t remember the last time I had to think much about writing Alabama’s preview.  Usually short, and to the point, this one will be different.  Kalen Deboer, welcome to the SEC.

2024 Alabama NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:

Alabama will look different offensively, as Deboer will bring a new style of offense into the SEC.  QB Milne’s ’23 stat sheet was better than people think, but Tide fans always expect more.  This year’s RB’s are unproven.  The OL is quite young but highly touted.  Sacks allowed the past three seasons were 41, 22, and 49 a year ago, 29 of which came in eight SEC regular season games. 

That’s another key watch area.  With Saban gone, the transfer portal became Alabama’s enemy for the 1st time.  Of the 39 defensive sacks, 25 were achieved by just three players, who all are gone from the program. 

This may change, but the only two defensive transfers slated to start reside in the secondary.  There’s continuity up front, and the new coordinator (former South Alabama Head Coach) has a solid track record.  Need a PK?  If Alabama comes calling, you come running!  Miami Ohio lost a good one, as incoming PK Nicholson was 27-28 a year ago. 

Alabama Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction

The “unbiased” selection committee conveniently forgot that the Tide nearly lost to Auburn a year ago, and voted them in the final four.  Without Saban, no such concession will be made, so Alabama must earn their way in. 

I see them losing to both Georgia and LSU, so one more loss (Wisky, Tennessee, Missouri, Oklahoma?) could be an issue.   I’m calling this 9-3.  I like the Deboer hire, but talent was lost, and this is not an easy schedule.

2024 Alabama Football Schedule and Games to Watch

Games 3-4 are at Wisconsin and home to revenge-minded Georgia.  I’ll precheck Wisconsin’s defense, Alabama’s run game, and Alabama’s OL.  The next tough game is 10/19 at Tennessee. 

The Volunteers did win hosting the Tide in ’22 in an extremely exciting game, but I expect Alabama’s offense to test their rebuilding defense.  A host of Missouri is next.  The Tigers are a far different team than when they last played each other. 

There’s little rest in the SEC, but the tradition of both LSU and Alabama having rest before they meet continues.  LSU “seems” like the better team this year.  The Tide closes at rested Oklahoma (last meet in ’18 playoffs, an Alabama win) and then hosts Auburn, who was one play away from an upset a year ago (bitter loss).  Auburn last won at Alabama in 2010.

We lose our bread and butter go-to play here, as Nick Saban went 5-12 ATS after a SU loss. 

In addition to the “expected” losses, I lean Wisconsin 9/14, and Tennessee 10/19.  Under Saban, Alabama was solid when a rush pick.  I will balance some of my action if the data helps again with the new staff (not a guarantee).
