Appalachian State College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?
Head Coach Shawn Clark hasn’t quite brought the Mountaineers back to elite levels, but after a down ’22 season, Appalachian St went 9-5 in ’23. Expectations are that they will win the East in ’24, with the hope of delivering Shawn his 1st Sun Belt title.
2024 Appalachian State NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:
The backfield is loaded. WR/TE is well stocked. Unfortunately, just 13 total starts return to the OL, with Jack Murphy tragically passing away.
Transfers from Georgia and FSU (no starts) try to fill two of the spots. Appalachian St had 35 defensive sacks last year. Many of the players return. The defense as a whole is decent, but only one senior is projected to start, and he’s a two-time transfer.
Last year’s point defense was the highest I’ve seen since I’ve been tracking them. It’s possible this unit improves, but it won’t be that special. The PK is good (19-22). The return units are above average.
Appalachian State Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction
I think they go 5-1 or 6-0 at home, depending on the Liberty result. Concerns along the OL, the overall defensive makeup, and to be honest, the finishing power of the staff makes me believe they will split their six road games, putting the East title up for grabs. That means another good season at possibly 8-4 or 9-3. Maybe the backfield and the kicking game can elevate the win total.

2024 Appalachian State Football Schedule and Games to Watch
Games 3-7 are highly interesting. They might be a slight favorite at East Carolina. They “should” win hosting South Alabama and get two extra days before they host Liberty, in what could (if all goes really well) equate to a play-in game for a playoff berth. That’s followed by road games at Marshall (home series) and Louisiana (lost last two, including the title game in ’21).
Appalachian St is a more than solid 48-8 SU at home the past nine seasons, only once having two home losses in a single year. The only remaining tough home game is vs. James Madison, where the Mountaineers have a rest advantage. They have a short week road game before that at Coastal, who beat them at home a year ago. The finale is at Georgia Southern, where I’ll precheck that team’s defense.
Appalachian State 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP
Appalachian St. is historically a solid home team, but not a solid home favorite vs. the spread. The game at Coastal 11/7 looks dangerous. Clark is also 3-11 ATS as a road favorite.
