Arizona Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH

The offense showed marked improvement last year but can still clean up a couple of areas. QB turnovers need to be reduced. Their top WR left for USC.

Arizona averaged nearly 31 points per game last year and if all goes right that number can rise just a bit more. The defense regressed.

The run D went from 4.85 up to 5.75. The pass D went from 58% to nearly 70%. Sacks closed at 16, and ten in their nine Pac 12 games.

Their new defensive coordinator had a rocky start and he returns. Six of his top seven tacklers are gone, and most of their sacks were from departed players. Let’s examine the newcomers. On the DL, projected starters come from Michigan (2 starts) and Indiana (11 starts on a bad defense).

At LB, a two-game starter comes from Oregon, with a projected backup from Washington. No additions are evident in the secondary, I’m projecting 5.2 for the run D and 65.5% for the pass D. Kicking is solid.

Arizona Football 2023 Predictions, Arizona Schedule:

Arizona should start 2-1, with an outside shot at 3-0 if they win at Miss Stata. Stanford has hit rock bottom. A loss, even at their place would be a setback for the Wildcat program.

The point defense would appear to be in trouble hosting Washington and USC. Washington State is not an elite team, but that road game presents a couple of situational advantageous for the Cougars.

Both Oregon State and Arizona will be rested prior to that home game. I’ll pre-check Oregon State’s defense (can it remain at ’22 levels) and their beleaguered kicking game prior to kickoff.

UCLA seeks revenge from a 34-28 loss as a 20-point home favorite a year ago. This venue hasn’t bothered the Bruins. If Arizona can win at Colorado the record could be 4-6 or 5-5, giving them bowl hopes. They close hosting Utah and at ASU.

Arizona Football Bottom Line:

Just 5-7, again? Watch the defense in September. If they better my projected numbers, then maybe they can earn a bowl bid.

Arizona Football HANDICAPPING TIP:

The lean is plus as a home dog to Oregon State, but perhaps a fade the following week vs. UCLA. I’ll also lean vs. if they are not a rush stat pick.
