Arizona State College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?
Arizona State (ASU) was 2nd only to Colorado in the number of transfer players new to the program. Recruiting violations under Herm Edwards forced the Sun Devils to re-staff the roster.
ASU went 3-9 last year and has once again turned over the roster. With so many changes, real, consistent progress might take some time.
2024 Arizona State NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:
ASU’s parade of QB’s had just a 7-13 TD to interception ratio, contributing to a -11 turnover ratio. A fix here would be of great value.
With an expected mediocre pass attack, the run game becomes much more important. I am projecting better #’s (4.25, up from 3.95 per carry). ASU did not even average 18 points per game last year, so they have a new coordinator.
With so many new faces, time is needed. The defense is just as raw, and even younger. There are likely six transfer starters on this side of the ball, including as many as four in the secondary. My projections are about the same as last year, but fall clearly in the below average range. Kicking could improve.

Another losing season, at about 4-8, and 3-9 is in play if the offense takes a step back. There are just too many moving parts, and so patience is needed.

2024 Arizona State Football Schedule and Games to Watch
Hosting teams with new coaches (Wyoming, Mississippi St) is an advantage out of the gate. Texas State has a solid offense, so it is likely up to ASU’s offense to win that road game (Thursday).
That gives ASU an extra two days before they stay on the road to face another good offense, suspect defense team in Texas Tech. That theme continues when hosting Kansas, so we all should have a great idea as to ASU’s offense, which should perform well in these games, and ASU’s defense, which will likely be challenged.
Utah presents different issues, but at least it’s a school ASU is familiar with. Road games at Cincy and Oklahoma St are separated by a week off, but the goal is 1-1, with a sweep unlikely. UCF is the 4th team that can beat you offensively, but has some issues on the other side of the ball.
I’ll precheck turnovers for both sides when ASU hosts BYU. The finale is at Arizona. By this time, we’ll know if the gap has narrowed between the two programs.
