Arkansas vs LSU Analysis
Razorback faithful hope they won’t ever come face-to-face with a worse loss than this past Saturday’s 21-19 failure against FBS newbie Liberty. Flames’ head coach Hugh Freeze called the victory over Arkansas in Fayetteville “maybe the biggest win of his career.”
Hogs’ bench boss Sam Pittman can swell the collegiate football myth that the “trap game” does exist by knocking off a first-year LSU head coach Brian Kelly and QB Jayden Daniels a week after the Tigers seized control of the SEC West race with a cyclopean 32-31 win over No. 6 Alabama in Baton Rouge on Saturday night.
Avoiding the Letdown
You will hear the term “letdown spot” several times between now and kickoff. The Tigers are going from playing a night game in Death Valley against the top program in the country last Saturday, to an 11am local kickoff against a team that just lost to Liberty.
But for LSU, avoiding the letdown is even more imperative because of the slow starts that they have been prone to this season. The Tigers have fallen behind, often by double digits, in every game this season except against New Mexico and Southern U. Each time they do that, they are tempting fate and have often required the magic of Daniels, who has already accounted for 24 TDs (14 pass, 10 run) this season.
Hungry Hogs’ Defense
The Barry Odom defense is down a few notches from a year ago. After allowing just 22 points per game last season, the Hogs’ defense is allowing 32 this year. Getting a turnover (or two?) would certainly help the Razerobacks’ cause this week, but Brian Kelly’s outfit has not committed many this season. Daniels has only thrown one interception all year as the Tigers enter their tenth game.
Arkansas remains dangerous because of big-play ability from QB KJ Jefferson (17 TD passes and only three interceptions) and thundering sophomore RB Raheim Sanders (1,107 yards rushing at 6.4 yards per carry).
Arkansas vs LSU Betting Notes
The underdog is 4-0 against the spread in the last four meetings of this series. Seven of Arkansas’ nine games have gone over the total this year.
Weather may be a factor here in Fayetteville on Saturday. Precipitation is not in the forecast, but temperatures will barely be above freezing at kickoff. It was 80 degrees on Thursday and projected to be 81 degrees on Friday in Baton Rouge, so we’re not sure how well Brian Kelly is going to be able to prepare his Tigers for the chilly start. The total has been trickling down in conjunction with the falling temperatures. Circa Sports opened this game at 65.5 last Sunday, but that’s dropped between 61 and 62 at most ‘books at the time of posting.
