Army College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?

Army finished 6-6, but did not qualify for a bowl game with two games vs. FCS foes.  They had one stint in a conference (CUSA), leaving after going 9-41. 

They now join Navy and enter the AAC, replacing SMU.  Unlike every other move, this one generates no buzz. 

2024 Army NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:

The needle could be pointing up, as the schedule is actually easier, and the backfield returns intact.  The OL looks slightly improved.  The only loss is their big play WR, but passing is secondary with Army. 

The defense suffered much more attrition.  Only two of their top 11 tacklers return.  I expect some regression.  Army loses one of the best ever kickers.  The untested replacement has big shoes to fill.

Army Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction

6-6, or just 5-7?  My scheduling grid says 6.5 wins, so perhaps that is a low assessment on my part.  The offense will be better, but the defense will likely take a step back.  It’s possible kicking will cost them a game this year.  If so, the margin for error in returning to a bowl game is going to be thin.

2024 Army Football Schedule and Games to Watch

The Rice game (at home) will determine if Army starts 2-1 or 1-2.  Rice is a veteran team, so this could be a tossup.  Army has never played Temple. 

That road game is just five days later.  UAB will test Army’s young secondary.  Conversely, Army will test UAB’s suspect run defense. 

East Carolina looks to rebound from a disastrous 2-10 season.  This is an Army home game.  Teams with rest before playing Army have the advantage of two weeks to prepare for the option.  Both East Carolina, and later, North Texas have that edge.  Army upset solid UTSA a year ago.  The Army-Navy game is not a counting game in the standings.  That doesn’t matter in this rivalry.
