Auburn vs Ole Miss Predictions
- Auburn Tigers -3 vs Ole Miss Rebels
- Total: 66 Points
- The road team has covered the point spread in the last seven games in this series.
The No. 9-ranked Ole Miss Rebels square off against the No. 21-ranked Auburn Tigers on Saturday night. Auburn is a 2.5-point home favorite at the time this college football preview went to press. If an SEC battle between two ranked programs doesn’t create enough drama, a rerun of the Nick Rolovich Show will be shown during the game at Jordan-Hare. Like, but not the same. Auburn head coach Bryan Harsin is not revealing if he has been vaccinated for the COVID virus. To remain on-point, this game between the Rebs and the Tigers is all about the quarterbacks, Matt Corral and Bo Nix.
Rolovich was fired from the Washington State Cougars football program after refusing to adhere to the state of Washington’s vaccination guidelines. Harsin isn’t required to reveal his status until December, but the drama of the situation has been kicked-started because of the coach’s decision and the drama stream has begun. Auburn’s employee vaccine mandate doesn’t require anything from Alabama employees until December, and that is how Harsin is handling the issue.
For self-handicappers that are looking for any edge in this SEC West matchup, you have been handed an Ole Miss edge by the head coach of the Auburn Tigers. Back to the players and the recent form of the two squads, it is reasonable to state the Ole Miss offense continues to gain steam. Corral and the explosive Lane Kiffin squad have earned wins over Arkansas and Tennessee and come into Saturday’s tile in Auburn having defeated LSU by 14.
The highest-scoring college football unit in all of the FBS is the Big 10 Ohio State Buckeyes. The second on that list with a subtitle that is labeled dangerous is the Ole Miss Rebels. The aberration of what Kiffin’s crew has performed to is that not only are Corral and his backfield plus receivers uber-good, they take care of the football. The Ole Miss offense has a mere four turnovers in its first seven games of the season.
Corral is the team-leading passer with a resume that shows he is Ole Miss’ leading ground gainer, too. The Heisman candidate has 100 carries for 474 yards and nine touchdowns on the season. Henry Parrish Jr and Jerrion Ealy combined for 795 yards on the ground with 141 carries. Dontario Drummond averages 17 yards per catch and has found the endzone on six of Corall’s throws. Drummond had 36 catches for 619 yards. Braylon Sanders and Jon Mingo have combined for 600 yards and six touchdowns while playing catch with Corral in this 2021 campaign.
The Ole Miss defense was at their best in the win over the Baton Rouge Tigers. Against LSU – but that was a distraction for LSU. The Rebels will be the better offense on Saturday night and if the Tigers coaching staff and the players are not focused on grinding out yards against the Rebs stop unit, this game will get away from quickly.
The Tigers as a team and the fan base are getting the best out of Bo Nix. His play in recent weeks has been as good as any other playing time in his Auburn career. Nix completed 80 percent of his passes in the Tigers victory over Arkansas and the performance against the Hogs was without an interception.
The Auburn defense won’t garner attention nationally, and they do very little in the way of forcing fumbles or applying pressure on the quarterback with the hope of creating interceptions, turnovers if you will.
The requirement for Auburn to earn a victory is keeping Corral and the Ole Miss offense off the Jordan-Hare grass. If Ole Miss finishes the game with 30 minutes or more of possession time, the final score will find Ole Miss winning by a double-digit margin.
The Auburn defense isn’t a unit that does enough to assist Nix and company with short fields, nor does it turn the opposition over multiple times per game. Unless Nix and company can win the time-of-possession battle and record 300 yards on the ground, or in that neighborhood, the Rebels not only win but do so in convincing fashion.
It is difficult to trust Nix and his offensive line to keep the Rebs defense honest enough to create holes and lanes for this Tigers offensive backfield to near the 300 yards of rushing mark. The last time that Auburn recorded 200 or more yards on the ground was against Akron and Alabama State, the first two games of the season, gaining 316 and 364 rushing yards, respectively.
Circa of Las Vegas opened the home-team Tigers as 1-point favorites on Sunday. There was back-and-forth action at the sportsbook for all Sunday. By the close of the Circa on-sight sportsbook Monday night, the Tigers had been bet to 2.5-point chalk. Thursday night, Oct 28th, found the Tigers number move another half-point, making them 3-point home favorites.
Lane Kiffin and his staff continue to add to their Ole Miss legacy with a fourth straight win over Auburn on Saturday night. The only failure by Corral and his teammates, Kiffin, and his staff this season has been to Saban’s Crimson Tide in Week 4. Despite the money moving to the home team’s petty cash pool, the WagerTalk lean in this SEC contest is Ole Miss and the points.

Auburn vs Ole Miss Analysis from The GoldSheet
Gus Malzahn made sure he went out a winner against the Rebels last season by winning at Vaught-Hemingway in one of those games the “good” Bo Nix showed up (238 yards passing and another 52 yards rushing). Therein always lies the key with the Tigers, however, as Nix has continued his Dr. Jekyll-Mr. Hyde pattern into this season, bad enough to get pulled by Bryan Harsin in a desperate game vs. Georgia State but good enough to go into Baton Rouge and take out LSU the next week. Which Nix shows up this Saturday? At least we have a better idea about Kiffin’s QB Matt Corral, still hanging around in the Heisman discussion. The difference between Corral 2020 and Corral 2021, however, is the reduction of mistakes, which often proved a killer when throwing 14 picks a year ago (including a pair of crucial interceptions vs. Auburn) but only guilty of one thus far in 2021 into late October. We don’t want to reduce this to just a Corral vs. Nix argument, but that also reflects our preference, as well as support for this curious series road trend that we suspect extends for another year.
