Boston College Football Preview 2023: Boston College Picks for Betting

Boston College (BC) was hoping that a healthy QB Jurkovec would lead them squarely into the top half of the ACC. 

Instead, he performed below expectations and BC never going, finishing 3-9 despite pulling off two upsets.  Jeff Hafley is 18-20 here, and just 8-16 in ACC play.  His job could be on the line this September.

Boston College Football Predictions: AREAS TO WATCH

Offensively, not only did the pass game underperform, but the run game was abysmal. 

They clocked in 130^th in the NCAA, and using my adjusted for sacks rush figure, ran 2.55-76 yards per game! 

September will tell me if there is a surprise in store at RB, but short of that, the BC offense won’t win them many games.  Still, thanks to a more favorable schedule, coupled with a deeper RB group and experienced OL, my projection is up to 3.8.  Rob Chudzinski was promoted to offensive coordinator but that doesn’t seem like a splash move.  

Defensively, I saw no real change, which meant that their 4.6 per carry 2021 run defense was still a worry.  That was true, as they allowed 4.55-165.5.  Even if that changes a bit, the secondary looks weaker.  Their DC left for the NFL, and BC promoted two in-house assistants.

Boston College 2023 Predictions, Boston College Schedule:

The overall schedule grades out easier, giving BC a chance to compete for a bowl berth.  A slipup in the opener hosting NIU would be a red flag. 

Considering they are 1-8 hosting FSU, I expect 2-1 heading to a key road game at Louisville, who has a new staff for 2023.  BC edged the Cards 34-33 at home in 2022.  Games after Louisville are home to a sinking Virginia team, at Army, at GT, and home to improved Connecticut. 

These are four winnable games, but my watch points will be clearly in place before the Virginia game, and I don’t think they can get by without a better rush attack.  Like with Louisville, BC edged Syracuse by a point in 2022.  In fact, BC won a trio of games by just one point.  This looks like edge, Syracuse.  Can they defeat rebuilding Virginia Tech at home?  History gives them a shot.  Closing games are at Pitt (won the last meeting at their place) and home to Miami, a team where morale is the best way to gauge how they’ll fare in November games. 

Boston College Football Bottom Line:

The schedule cries 6-6 or 7-5, but the talent and perhaps coaching says 5-7 is possible.  5-7 might not be enough to save Hafley’s job, so winning the toss-up games will be critical.

Boston College Football HANDICAPPING TIP:

If BC can improve off their -12 turnover ratio (each turnover is worth 3.75 points) then there could be value in backing them as an occasional dog.  The best opportunities may exist in November, but given the schedule, I might be fading the Eagles if they are not the rush pick..
