BYU Football Preview 2023: BYU Best Bets, Expert Picks

It’s been a long time coming, but BYU has landed in a Power Five conference.  I had them 8-4 a year ago and they went 7-5, plus a bowl victory. 

What’s interesting is that due to players going on mission’s the roster is typically older, and age can be a plus in the trenches (more developed bodies).  That worked often vs. many teams on their schedule, but will it work vs. the big boys?  Let’s find out.

BYU Football Predictions: Strengths, Weaknesses, Improvements, Declines

BYU demoted their defensive coordinator late in 2022.  He left after the season.  Jay Hill (from Weber State) is now in charge.  EVERY team scored 20 or more vs. the Cougars last year, and six of those teams would be lower power rated as compared to their new conference schedule. 

The #’s read 4.7/171 and 66.3%.  Despite five of their top six tacklers returning, my projected numbers for 2023 are worse.  BYU was downright awful in regular season sacks, with a total of just 13.  I suspect the numbers will not improve much, if any this year but this is certainly on my September (and beyond) watch list.  Much traveled QB Kedon Slovis tries to uphold BYU’s fine QB tradition. 

Slovis is talented, but has to cut down on his turnovers.  I don’t expect a repeat of their 5.45/176 run attack (I’m projecting 4.4), but the OL looks solid.  How the offense looks will be charted throughout the season.  The kicking game is unsettled.  BYU changed special team coordinators, with the new guy coaching DE’s 1^st and also handling special team duties.  Let’s see how that works out (former BYU LB).

Brigham Young Football Schedule: Which Games Will They Win?:

BYU has just one early test, that being at Arkansas.  In last year’s home game, the Hogs ran 42-277 as they trounced the Cougars 52-35.  Their 1^st ever Big 12 conference game is at Kansas. 

That one looks to be high scoring.  After that, BYU hosts Cincy, goes to TCU, and returns home to face Texas Tech.  Hopefully the home crowd will appreciate being in a conference and make the stadium loud.  BYU typically has a very loyal fan base. 

Games 9-10 could decide BYU’s standing in the new conference.  They play at West Virginia, a team that has severe questions, and host Iowa St, a close to the vest squad that tends to play games that go down to the wire.  I’ll pre-check BYU’s pass rush, turnover tendencies, and home record. 

BYU closes with Oklahoma and Oklahoma State (road game).

BYU Football Bottom Line: Total Wins Expected Expert Pick

Much will depend on QB play, the DL, and the coaching changes.  Head Coach Sitake’s tenure has been better than I expected, but the schedule is going to be tougher from now on. 

I have them at 6-6 if they can hold serve at home vs. Iowa State.  Winning at home is vital. 

BYU Football HANDICAPPING TIP:

I’m worried about how they’ll fare hosting TT.  Other than that, I’ll look at my keys to determine if there’s value backing or fading BYU.
