BYU College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?
It was a long time coming, but BYU landed in a Power Five conference. Sitting at 5-2, the Cougars went 0-5 down the stretch.
For the 2nd time in his tenure, Kalani Sitake has a place on my “coveted” bottom five coach list. That’s not a good place to be.
2024 BYU NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:
I see no real change offensively for ’24. Yes, they have a transfer QB, but I’m basically staying flat on my projections. The same is nearly true defensively. There are new DT’s, which could negatively affect the run game and must be studied early in the season.
The top two tacklers are gone, but that’s not atypical for a team, and they may have found a decent pass rusher in a transfer move. That’s critical, as BYU had 11 sacks in ’23, and an awful 26 sacks over their last 25 games. The secondary is stable, as is the kicking game.
BYU Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction
Despite having more stability than a number of teams in the Big 12, one thing stands out. Coaches on my bottom five list tend to underachieve, and on average, half (2.6 of 5 to be exact) end up losing their jobs. I think 5-7 is the ceiling, and 4-8 seems about right. I’ll know much more as games 1-5 play out.

2024 BYU Football Schedule and Games to Watch
BYU is likely to start 2-1, but an upset loss would not surprise me. Can they pull a home upset vs. Kansas St in their Big 12 opener? That would be a huge confidence builder. If not, I see them as being the underdog in EACH of the next seven contests.
Baylor hosts BYU, and then BYU has the week off before hosting the new staff of Arizona. Shouldn’t that be at least 1-1? If the run game overachieves, they could cause problems offensively vs. a UCF team that has run D issues. BYU hosts Kansas with revenge.
Which ’24 defense is better? Squeeze even two wins out of these seven games and at 4-6, a bowl berth is possible. BYU closes at rebuilding ASU and hosts Houston, who might be picked to finish last in the expanded Big 12.
BYU 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP
Sometimes I go off course, as I did when I went 1-2 playing ON BYU in ’23.
I expect to have 3-5 plays against the Cougars this year, so my recommendation is to think that way 1st unless the stat sheet/late game coaching says otherwise.
