Clemson College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?
Has the sky really fallen? Clemson was just 4-4 in ACC play, adjusting to a) two new coordinators, and b) their own unwillingness to take part in the transfer portal.
2024 will be a test case to see if Clemson’s “traditional”, old fashioned methods of developing and keeping its own talent still works.
2024 Clemson NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:
My projected rush #’s were nearly perfect a year ago, so perhaps their overall record shouldn’t have been that surprising. Also, my 58% (improved from 61%) pass D projection was short, as the Tigers allowed just 52.5% (I use regular season stats only).
Kicking was down a bit, but even turnovers (+3) was not the issue. They lost three road games to ACC bowl teams, and also lost in overtime at home to FSU after the Tigers missed a 29-yard field goal in regulation.
I have no real issues offensively as long as RB Mafah and the top WR’s stay healthy. The OL is top ten material. The run D did regress as expected in ’23. I don’t think it gets back to traditional Clemson standards, so that could be an issue.
They lost a 1st round draft pick in CB Nate Wiggins but I still expect a decent pass D%. All eyes will be on a freshman PK. Like it or not, entrance into the newly expanded 12-team playoff format might depend on him.
Clemson Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction
10-2, but 9-3 is in play if kicking and/or the DL lets them down. A win at FSU should get them into the ACC title game.
A loss could put them at the mercy of whatever the ACC tiebreaker system is in a league of 17 teams.

2024 Clemson Football Schedule and Games to Watch
The ACC schedule is actually easier this year. Obviously, the opener in Atlanta vs. Georgia is a monster game. The dog is 14-4 ATS in the series, and the Bulldogs beat Clemson as a dog in ’21. Next up is dangerous App St, followed by a likely welcome early week off.
I expect a win over solid NC St, but will certainly check their run D and kicking game in advance. As an aside, I have several key checks on each individual team sheet, and I encourage everyone to develop their own check points prior to the season to avoid overreaction.
Another critical game is 10/5 at FSU. Can Clemson extract revenge vs. former QB, D.J. Uiagalelei? The letdown game (also on the road) at Wake is next, but Clemson is on an overall 15-game win streak vs. Wake. Clemson has a solid scheduling edge 11/2 hosting Louisville. They did not meet in ’23 (8-0 as a host).
I expect at least 3-1 down the stretch. The games that are the most “difficult” are at Pittsburgh (0-1 at that site) and at improving Virginia Tech.
Clemson 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP
My rush stat formula has been solid at isolating hidden value over the years. The sample sizes are in the thousands, and updated yearly, conference by conference (as some conferences are consistently strong in this area) and checking for recency.
As an example, hidden value can occur if team A is a rush stat pick (based on the spread) despite playing a significantly tougher schedule than team B.
Other examples are new coaches who are not rush picks are historically play against material (195-120 last ten seasons, with a total sample size over 1,150), and rush picks combined with line value (3.5 points or more difference in my Power #’s vs. the line) are over 60% in success rate for underdogs, and 56.5% for favorites.
Despite inflated spreads, Clemson is 38-15 in that role over the years, and 21-6 lately, including 6-2 in their last three “down” seasons. I wouldn’t want to go against them when a rush pick.
