Clemson vs North Carolina Betting Analysis

With two weeks until College Football Championship Weekend, we already have the ACC Championship set between Clemson and North Carolina.

The Tigers still have an outside shot at representing the conference in the College Football Playoff but we’d have to see some wild events happen over the next two weeks in order to do so.

Before next week the Tigers have their instate rivalry matchup against the SEC’s South Carolina Gamecocks as the Tar Heels will face off with North Carolina State. The ACC Championship spread currently sits with Clemson favored by seven points to win.

Tigers Set For Tar Heels Air Attack on Defense

If it wasn’t for a non-conference loss to Notre Dame, the Tigers would be in the thick of it in the College Football Playoff. They’re undefeated in conference play with much thanks to their defense only allowing 20 points per game this season.

They’ve only allowed 318 total yards per game which is 3rd in the conference, but have allowed 214 yards per game through the air which is 6th in the conference and something the Tar Heels will look to exploit furthermore.

They have a relatively balanced offensive attack with three players totaling 420+ yards on the ground so far including lead back Will Shipley who’s racked up 660 rushing yards along with 13 rushing touchdowns.

They don’t have one key receiver as no pass catcher on their roster has more than 506 receiving on the season heading into their last game against South Carolina.

Six different pass catchers have caught multiple touchdowns this season. Quarterback DJ Uiagalelei has improved in each season at Clemson.

To compare he had nine touchdowns and ten interceptions last season in 374 pass attempts. He has 21 touchdowns and only six interceptions so far this season in 334 pass attempts. The Tar Heels pass defense is horrendous which could lead to multiple down field opportunities for Uiagalelei.

North Carolina Needs Defensive Jolt

The Coastal Division was up for grabs when the season started as many speculated Miami possibly representing this division in the championship game. That observation faded away quickly especially after the Tar Heels 27-24 win over the Hurricanes on October 8th.

It’s a tale of two worlds for North Carolina though with quarterback Drake Maye leading the charge with 3,614 pass yards which is 3rd in the nation.

Consequently though the Tar Heels are dead last on defense in the ACC in points allowed, pass yards allowed and total yards allowed leaving many scratching their head on how they got to this point.

The only way to combat a bad defense is with great offense which Maye has lead the Tar Heels to the highest scoring team in the conference as well as producing the most pass yards of any team in the ACC.

Wide receiver Josh Downs has been the biggest beneficiary of Maye’s success totaling 878 yards receiving along with 11 touchdowns. The Tar Heels will most certainly need to step up on defense if they want any shot of winning the ACC Championship in Charlotte.

Clemson vs North Carolina ACC Championship Prediction

Clemson is justifiably the favorite in this game and if they’re going to win it’s going to be with their defense.

They won’t try to go tit for tat with North Carolina on offense and instead will try and slow it down on the ground with Shipley and others in the Tigers rushing attack.

With the over/under sitting at 60, let’s look at a play on the under as only three games on Clemson’s schedule have gone over this number all season.

Prediction: Under 60 Points
