Colorado College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?

Colorado started 3-0 and everyone got excited.  So did I, but for far different reasons.  The turnover ratio was +6.  The rush ratio was 92-260-2.8 offensively, and 117-589-5.0 defensively.  The OL had allowed an amazing 16 sacks through three games. 

This is why box scores matter.  Colorado finished 4-8, and I cashed an in-season UNDER 6.5 win total (friends of mine found under 7!).  Deion Sanders has bigger things in mind for ’24. 

2024 Colorado NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:

The obvious key is reducing the 56 sacks allowed.  UTEP, Jackson State, and Houston provide three of the five new OL starters.  These are hardly powerhouse programs, but presumably, Sanders has a better understanding of what he wants the OL to look like. 

The new left tackle is a highly touted freshman.  This is a week-by-week study.  Even corrected for sacks, the run game was dismal.  That unit is all new, led by a transfer from Ohio State.  Despite these issues, QB Sanders was incredible.  Let’s hope he stays healthy.  The new defensive coordinator was with the Bengals the past eight seasons. 

Six returning starters are joined by transfers from Pittsburgh, ASU, and Oklahoma.  I’m projecting small improvement.  One area that teams usually can gain “free” improvement is by fixing porous turnover ratios. 

Unfortunately, Colorado had a +9 turnover ratio, so there won’t be any gains made here.  Colorado found a kicker midway through last season, and he returns. 

Colorado Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction

 I called them 2-10 last year (dominated preseason and in-season UNDERS.  Colorado was actually competitive down the stretch in ’23, losing three of their last four games by 7, 3, and 6 points.  I’ll call this 5-7 right now.  Making adjustments in-season will again be critical.  Watch the OL and the new DC carefully.

2024 Colorado Football Schedule and Games to Watch

The new look roster has to host perennial powerhouse North Dakota St to start ’24.  Up next is a trip to revenge-minded Nebraska. 

Next is a trip to Colorado State, who lost a tough one in double overtime last year.  2-1 is the ceiling.  Has Baylor improved?  That’s the biggest check for 9/21.  I’m not a big Gus Malzahn (UCF) fan, but he hosts Colorado with two weeks to prep. 

I’ll chart the Colorado defense prior to that game.  Kansas St is good, but not invincible.  Can Colorado stun them at home?  Utah and Oklahoma St come to Boulder.  Can this result in a split?  Colorado will likely be an underdog at both Texas Tech and at Kansas, but those defenses are not perfect.  Can this be a split?  75% of the games in the Big 12 can be classified as tossups.  Coaching, consistency, and kicking might be the ultimate reasons why these games are won or lost.
