Colorado vs Utah Betting Analysis

Saturday’s Colorado vs Utah clash features two teams limping home to the finish line of the regular season. WagerTalk college football handicapper Kevin Dolan shares his thoughts on this Rocky Mountain matchup.

The Buffaloes are going through an incredibly difficult stretch of the season, losing to Oregon, USC and Washington by an average of 41.3 points per game. They now must host Utah as a 30-point home underdog.

Utah enters this contest off a heartbreaking three-point loss to Oregon. If the Utes can pick themselves off the mat, they’ll draw confidence in this matchup with Colorado in two areas: 1) They’ve been fantastic against bottom-tier opponents this season with five wins coming by 20+ points; 2) The Utes have won nine of the last ten against Colorado.

Utah’s Running Game Creating Problems

The Utes put up 156 yards rushing last week against the Oregon Ducks and averaged almost twice the number of yards per carry in that game as well, and it’s an area of Utah’s game that has been dominant for them this season.

Utah ranks top-20 in the country in total rushing offense, averaging 201.1 yards per game on the ground. That number increases to 247 yards per game over the last three weeks (No. 7). The Utes have enjoyed solid production from Tavion Thomas, Ja’Quinden Jackson and others this season in their running game.

Colorado Run Gauntlet This Season

While it’s been far from a successful season to say the least for this Colorado Buffaloes team, not many teams have faced the kind of QB gauntlet that Colorado has this year.

The Buffaloes have already faced five of the nation’s top 20 quarterbacks over their first 11 games this season and will welcome in another one on Saturday. Utah’s Cameron Rising is No. 9 in the country in QBR and will be anxious to atone for last week’s tough result at Oregon.

Colorado vs Utah Prediction

While it’s technically still possible that Utah makes it into the Pac-12 Championship Game against USC, it also looks extremely unlikely as well given everything that has to go right for the Utes in order to make that happen.

Because of that, 29.5 points looks like an extremely big number to lay here on the road favorite despite how poor Colorado has been this season, and we’re just not sure the motivation will be there for Utah to run up the score in this one.

Utah has covered just one of its last five road games heading into Saturday’s matchup and we expect that run to continue here as Colorado likely finds a way to stay within the number this weekend and cover the spread. Take the Colorado Buffaloes +30 on Saturday to cover at home against the Utah Utes in Pac-12 action.

Prediction: Colorado Buffaloes +30
