Duke College Football 2024 Preview: What’s the Situation?
Duke’s hire of Mike Elko was outstanding, but he’s off to Texas A&M. Wanting to remain relevant, the Blue Devils hired Manny Diaz, fresh off a successful stint at Penn State (defensive coordinator). Can they keep the momentum going?
2024 Duke NCAAF AREAS TO WATCH:
QB play will be a critical watch this season as highly touted former Texas backup Maalik Murphy is slated to start.
The run game last year was even better than expected at 5.1 per carry, but despite the slightly easier schedule (Notre Dame is off the docket), I think while still being solid, will come in at 4.55 per carry. I say this because I’m concerned about the OL, which lost two rare draft picks (for Duke), including 1st round pick Barton.
There’s two solid RB’s and a WR with NFL talent which keeps them above average. Manny Diaz knows defense (excellent as Penn St’s DC), but so did Mike Elko.
The DL comes in lighter this season, and I have the run D regressing a bit. I’ll watch this early on to see if I’m wrong, but note that their 1st six games represent the softest part of the schedule so be careful in your evaluations. The secondary looks improved. Kicking is more than solid (9-11 from 40+ yards).
Duke Football 2024 Predicted Total Wins Prediction
Last year I said that going 7-5 would be an outstanding achievement.
Duke went 7-5, and won their bowl game. A 4-2 start is doable, and could get them to 6-6 and another bowl game.
Anything less than a 4-2 start could be problematic. I went UNDER 6 wins, but there is a path to at least 6-6 if the key offensive players stay healthy, plus they get milage out of raw QB Murphy, and the new PK delivers. Let’s see how the coaching transition goes.

2024 Duke Football Schedule and Games to Watch
The non-conference slate is embarrassing. This is 4-0 unless they lose at Northwestern, a team with revenge but a lower starting Power Rating as opposed to Duke (projected).
The dog is 27-12 ATS in games involving North Carolina. My pre-game question is this: Which defense is better? I expect a loss at Georgia Tech. A win would set this team up in a favorable situation hosting Florida St, at least via the point spread.
A critical pre-check of mine prior to 10/26 (SMU) is how SMU’s stat sheet is holding up as they move to a clearly tougher conference.
Games 9-11 are difficult. They go to Miami (Diaz used to coach there, Miami just played rival FSU), stay on the road to face NC St (bad situation, also 24-3 revenge for NC St) and host Virginia Tech (favorite has dominated). Duke closes at Wake, which is a game that could go either way.
Duke 2024 Football Expert HANDICAPPING TIP
Given the VERY soft opening schedule, plus the valuable new coach rush data, I’ll fade them when not a rush pick in ’24.
My other strategy coming into this season is to look dog 1st in their games and hope the key checks align.
